Prognostic role of plasma von Willebrand factor and soluble E-selectin levels for future cardiovascular events in a 'real-world' community cohort of patients with atrial fibrillation.
Endothelial damage/dysfunction may contribute to a prothrombotic state in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and the increased risk of thromboembolism and cardiovascular events. Raised plasma von Willebrand factor (vWf), an established marker of endothelial damage/dysfunction, has been associated with stroke and vascular events, at least in a clinical trial population. Soluble E-selectin (sE-sel) is another biomarker of endothelial activation/dysfunction, with more limited data on prognostic outcomes in AF. ⋯ High plasma vWf and soluble E-selectin levels are associated with an increased risk of clinical adverse events (acute myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke and all-cause mortality) in 'real-world' patients with AF. These soluble biomarkers may potentially aid clinical risk stratification in this common arrhythmia.

Stress hyperglycaemia in hospitalized patients with coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes risk.
⋯ We reported a high prevalence of AGR in subjects with CAD. Stress hyperglycaemia in patients with CAD was not associated with an increased risk of diabetes 3 months later. HbA1c in patients hospitalized with CAD was a useful tool to detect AGR.

Comparative StudyNon-HDL cholesterol vs. apo B for risk of coronary heart disease in healthy individuals: the EPIC-Norfolk prospective population study.
There is an ongoing debate about the performance of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) compared with apolipoprotein B (apo B) in the prediction of coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. Therefore, we compared the associations between non-HDL-C and apo B in regard to CHD among apparently healthy Western European individuals. ⋯ In this prospective study, non-HDL-C and apo B were comparable in their ability to predict risk of future CHD.

Clinical and genetic characteristics of Chinese patients with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia-associated pulmonary hypertension.
Mutations in activin receptor-like kinase-1 (ACVRL-1) or endoglin (ENG) are mostly identified in patients with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) associated with pulmonary hypertension (PH), but have not yet been studied in Chinese patients. ⋯ Our findings have revealed the clinical phenotype and molecular genetic features of HHT-associated PH in Chinese Han patients and indicate that mutations of ACVRL-1 and ENG are genetic predisposing factors in Chinese patients. Our data further addressed clinical management and have provided limited experience in treating this group of disorders.
