Meta AnalysisFeatures of severe COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
To systematically review clinical and biochemical characteristics associated with the severity of the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-related disease (COVID-19). ⋯ Characteristics associated with the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection may allow an early identification and management of patients with poor outcomes.

Pediatric/Congenital Cardiology Physician Scientists - An Endangered Species.
Producing excellent physician scientists starts with the active discovery of talent and dedication, supported by the strong belief that physician involvement in biomedical research is essential to make fundamental discoveries that improve human health. The revolution of surgical and interventional therapy of structural heart disease has had 'profoundly positive effects on survival and quality of life over the decades. (…) Small increments in clinical improvement will still be possible in the future, but for the most part, the potential for major advancement using these techniques has been exhausted' (Frank Hanley, MD; Stanford). Personalized medicine, rapid genetic diagnostics, RNA and extracellular vesicle biology, epigenetics, gene editing, gene and stem cell-derived therapy are exemplary areas where specialized training for paediatric/congenital cardiology physician scientists will be increasingly needed to further advance the field. ⋯ To develop the skills and expertise in both clinical congenital cardiology and basic research, the training of fellows must be focused and integrated. The current pandemic COVID-19 puts additional pressure and hurdles on fellows-in-training (FIT) and early career investigators (ECI) who aim to establish, consolidate or expand their own research group. Here, we discuss the major challenges, opportunities and necessary changes for academic institutions to sustain and recruit physician scientists in paediatric/congenital cardiology in the years to come.

Review Meta AnalysisAssociation between diabetes mellitus and lung cancer: meta-analysis.
This study aimed to summarize the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and the incidence of lung cancer using a meta-analysis of cohort studies. ⋯ This meta-analysis suggests that DM has no significant impact on the incidence of lung cancer in men but has a harmful effect on women.

Prevalence and control of hypertension among patients on hemodialysis.
Earlier studies provided considerably variable estimates on the prevalence and control rates of hypertension in haemodialysis because of their heterogeneity in definitions and blood pressure (BP) measurement techniques applied to detect hypertension. ⋯ This study shows that the prevalence, but mainly the control rates of hypertension in patients on haemodialysis, differs between peridialytic and interdialytic BP recordings. Therefore, the wider use of home BP monitoring may improve the determination of BP control status in this high-risk population.

ReviewGenetic Predisposition in Metabolic-Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease and Cardiovascular Outcomes - Systematic Review.
Despite the demonstrated increased cardiovascular (CV) risk associated with metabolic-dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), genetic variants predisposing to MAFLD were not constantly associated with CV events. Recently, rs641738C > T near membrane-bound O-acyltransferase domain-containing 7 (MBOAT7) has been studied in MAFLD and CV outcomes. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association between rs641738C > T in the presence and severity of hepatic steatosis, fibrosis, biochemical markers and progression to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in addition to CV outcomes in MAFLD. ⋯ Despite inconclusive results in Asian populations, rs641738C > T near MBOAT7 is associated with increased hepatic fat, MAFLD severity, susceptibility to develop NASH, advanced fibrosis and HCC in adults from Caucasian, Hispanic and African American ethnicities with MAFLD, as well as elevated ALT levels in children, while exerting neutral effects in CAD.
