Assessing cardiorespiratory fitness relative to sex improves surgical risk stratification.
To what extent sex-related differences in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) impact postoperative patient mortality and corresponding implications for surgical risk stratification remains to be established. ⋯ Low CRF accounted for more deaths than traditional CVD risk factors, and when CRF was considered relative to sex, the disproportionate number of females stratified unfit was corrected. These findings support clinical consideration of 'sex-specific' CRF thresholds to better inform postoperative mortality and improve surgical risk stratification.

ALKBH1 contributes to renal cell carcinoma progression by reducing N6-methyladenine of GPR137.
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approximately 4% of all adult malignancies with high mortality worldwide. Although conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment has been applied for RCC in clinic, the mortality rate of patients is increasing each year, and patients with metastatic RCC are still suffering from poor prognosis. Thus, further investigation of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the development and progression of RCC is of particular importance. ⋯ Our results indicate that ALKBH1-GPR137 axis might be used as a potential therapeutic target in RCC, contributing to finding new prognostic biomarkers for RCC at an early stage.

Review Meta AnalysisEvaluation of Heart Failure Admission as a Surrogate for Mortality in Randomized Clinical Trials: A Meta-Analysis.
Heart failure (HF) admission is used as a study endpoint in clinical trials. However, it remains unclear whether it can be a valid surrogate endpoint for mortality. ⋯ Our findings indicate that HF admission may not always be a valid surrogate for mortality in patients with HF. Rather, the surrogacy of HF admission may be dependent on clinical background and interventions.

Review Meta AnalysisMultifaceted Role of Galectin-4 In Cancer: A Systematic Review.
Galectins are β-galactoside-binding proteins. Galectin-4 has shown an effect on cancer progression/metastasis, especially in cancers of the digestive system. This can be attributed to altered glycosylation pattern of cell membrane molecules, which is a characteristic attribute of oncogenesis. The aim of this paper is to systematically review galectin-4 in different cancers and its role in disease progression. ⋯ A differential expression of galectin-4 was observed in different cancer stages/ and types. Furthermore, galectin-4 was found to modulate disease progression. A meta-analysis and comprehensive mechanistic studies, pertaining to different aspects of galectin-4 biology, could give statistically driven correlations, elucidating multifaceted role of galectin-4 in cancer.
