Six-minute walking distance and desaturation-distance ratio in allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
Most patients with haematological malignancies who undergo allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) receive chemotherapy before the transplant to control the disease. Certain chemotherapy drugs can cause lung toxicity. Conversely, in patients with chronic respiratory conditions, the 6-min walking test (6MWT) and the desaturation-distance ratio (DDR) have demonstrated prognostic significance. Our objective was to determine whether the 6MWD and DDR, assessed prior to HSCT, have a prognostic impact on survival at 24 months post-HSCT. ⋯ Our results showed that individuals who exhibit a 6MWD shorter than 566 ms or a decline in DDR beyond .306 experienced reduced survival rates at 24 months after HSCT.

The association between atrial fibrillation and dementia: A UK linked electronic health records cohort study.
We investigated the association between atrial fibrillation (AF) and dementia, and its subtypes (vascular-VaD, Alzheimer, mixed and rare dementia), and identified predictors for dementia in AF patients. ⋯ AF patients have an increased risk of dementia, independent of stroke, with highest risk of VaD. Management and prevention of the identified risk factors could be crucial to reduce the increasing burden of dementia.

Association of Lipoprotein(a) with arterial stiffness: A Mendelian randomization study.
In this study we used Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the potential causal association of lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] levels with pulse wave velocity (PWV). ⋯ We did not find evidence indicating that Lp(a) is causally associated with PWV, the gold standard marker of arterial stiffness.

ReviewFatal attractions that trigger inflammation and drive atherosclerotic disease.
Atherosclerosis is the salient, underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases, such as arrhythmia, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, pulmonary embolism and myocardial infarction. In recent years, atherosclerosis pathophysiology has evolved from a lipid-based to an inflammation-centric ideology. ⋯ We will highlight and discuss the complex role of the interaction between autoantigens and autoantibodies, and the presence of foreign antigens in the development of atherosclerotic lesions in relationship to pro-inflammatory responses.
