Six-minute walking distance and desaturation-distance ratio in allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
Most patients with haematological malignancies who undergo allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) receive chemotherapy before the transplant to control the disease. Certain chemotherapy drugs can cause lung toxicity. Conversely, in patients with chronic respiratory conditions, the 6-min walking test (6MWT) and the desaturation-distance ratio (DDR) have demonstrated prognostic significance. Our objective was to determine whether the 6MWD and DDR, assessed prior to HSCT, have a prognostic impact on survival at 24 months post-HSCT. ⋯ Our results showed that individuals who exhibit a 6MWD shorter than 566 ms or a decline in DDR beyond .306 experienced reduced survival rates at 24 months after HSCT.

Association of metabolic health and obesity with coronary heart disease in adult cancer survivors.
The metabolically healthy obese (MHO) phenotype is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in the general population. However, association of metabolic health and obesity phenotypes with CHD risk in adult cancer survivors remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations between different metabolic health and obesity phenotypes with incident CHD in adult cancer survivors. ⋯ Adult cancer survivors with MHO phenotype had a higher risk of CHD than those who are MHN. Metabolic health status and obesity were jointly associated with CHD risk in adult cancer survivors.

The sodium-chloride difference: A marker of prognosis in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
The difference between serum sodium and chloride ion concentrations (SCD) may be considered as a surrogate of a strong ion difference and may help to identify patients with a worse prognosis. We aimed to assess SCD as an early prognostic marker among patients with myocardial infarction. ⋯ Low SCD on admission is associated with an increased risk of 30-day mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction treated with PCI and may serve as a useful prognostic marker for these patients.

Effect of statins on sepsis and inflammatory factors: A Mendelian randomization study.
As inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR), statins can reduce the synthesis of low-density lipoptrotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and are clinically used as first-line lipid-lowering drugs to prevent cardiovascular diseases. However, the effect of statins on sepsis is controversial. Therefore, we intend to explore the effects of statins on sepsis and inflammatory factors through Mendelian randomization (MR). ⋯ Statins may have a protective effect on sepsis and this may provide a new idea for the treatment of sepsis.

ReviewClinical impact of cerebral protection during transcatheter aortic valve implantation.
Embolization of debris can complicate transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) causing stroke. Cerebral embolism protection (CEP) devices can divert or trap debris. ⋯ Use of CEP during TAVI is associated with improved outcomes. Future studies will identify patients who benefit most from CEP.
