Long-term fasting induces a remodelling of fatty acid composition in erythrocyte membranes.
Long-term fasting (LF) activates an adaptative response to switch metabolic fuels from food glucose to lipids stored in adipose tissues. The increase in free fatty acid (FFA) oxidation during fasting triggers health benefits. We questioned if the changes in lipid metabolism during LF could affect lipids in cell membranes in humans. We thus analysed the FA composition in erythrocyte membranes (EM) during 12.6 ± 3.5 days of LF and 1 month after food reintroduction. ⋯ Long-term fasting triggers changes in the FA composition of EM.

ReviewA scoping review evaluating the current state of gut microbiota and its metabolites in valvular heart disease physiopathology.
The human microbiome is crucial in regulating intestinal and systemic functions. While its role in cardiovascular disease is better understood, the link between intestinal microbiota and valvular heart diseases (VHD) remains largely unexplored. ⋯ TMAO has been mainly identified as a prognostic marker in VHD. Gut microbiota dysbiosis has been observed in various forms of VHD and deserve further study.

Ten-year clinical outcomes after drug-eluting stents implantation according to clinical presentation-Insights from the DECADE cooperation.
Investigations of very long-term outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES) according to clinical presentation are scarce. Here, we investigated the 10-year clinical outcomes of patients undergoing DES-PCI according to clinical presentation. ⋯ Compared to CCS patients, ACS patients treated with PCI and DES implantation have an increased risk of all-cause death and repeat revascularization of remote vessels up to 1 year, with no significant differences thereafter and up to 10-year follow-up. ACS patients have a consistently higher risk of MI and definite ST. Whether these differences persist with current antithrombotic and secondary prevention therapies requires further investigation.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyLong-term cognitive function changes with non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants in older patients with atrial fibrillation. A multicenter cohort study.
Atrial fibrillation is associated with several comorbidities, particularly cognitive impairment and dementia, especially in older patients. Non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) or vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) were used to prevent thromboembolic events. However, data on the real benefit of these drugs on cognitive function decline remains controversial. In this study we evaluated the effect of NOACs compared to VKAs on the absolute and relative decline in cognitive function over time. ⋯ In older patients with atrial fibrillation, the use of NOACs was associated with a smaller decline of cognitive function over time compared to the VKAs, regardless that patients in the NOACs group were older and with a higher burden of comorbidities.

Review Meta AnalysisAdrenergic dysfunction in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and fibromyalgia (FM) are comorbid disorders with overlapping symptoms. Research highlights autonomic dysfunction compared to healthy individuals, particularly involving the sympathetic branch. While past reviews focused on neurophysiological assessments, this systematic review summarises biological adrenergic markers, offering deeper insights into the observed sympathetic dysfunction in ME/CFS and FM aiming to identify targetable pathophysiological mechanisms. ⋯ This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed adrenergic dysfunction mainly in patients with ME/CFS. Higher baseline adrenaline levels and atypical responses to exercise in ME/CFS indicate that sympathetic dysfunction, underscored by adrenergic abnormalities, is more involved in the pathophysiology of ME/CFS rather than FM.
