Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, circulating ketone bodies and all-cause mortality in a general population-based cohort.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly prevalent, paralleling the obesity epidemic. Ketone bodies are produced in the liver, but it is currently uncertain whether circulating ketone bodies are increased in the context of NAFLD. We investigated the association between NAFLD and circulating ketone bodies and determined the extent to which NAFLD and circulating ketone bodies are associated with all-cause mortality. ⋯ Circulating ketone bodies were increased in participants with suspected NAFLD. Both suspected NAFLD and higher circulating ketone bodies are associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality.

CommentRight ventricle dysfunction assessment for transcatheter tricuspid valve repair: a matter of debate.
Newer approaches in transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR) have recently showed optimistic data of efficacy and safety in patients at high risk for surgery. However, the absence of residual regurgitation (and subsequently higher likelihood for developing afterload mismatch) with TTVR compared with transcatheter tricuspid valve intervention may become a critical concern if RV dysfunction is misdiagnosed. ⋯ In this context, strain imaging may find a further application to provide a more comprehensive stratification of the severity of RV dysfunction and thus help to better define the eligibility criteria and timing for TTVR. Meanwhile, it is of paramount importance to underline the contribution given by the Trivalve study on the understanding of the role of RV function in TTVI, that so far was largely undefined, being evaluated only in small noncontrolled cohorts.

Observational StudyNeutrophil degranulation biomarkers characterize restrictive echocardiographic pattern with diastolic dysfunction in patients with diabetes.
To investigate the potential association between neutrophil degranulation and patterns of myocardial dysfunction in a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). ⋯ Neutrophil degranulation is associated with the restrictive/DD echocardiographic pattern in patients with T2DM, but not with the normal pattern and dilative/SD patterns. Neutrophils could have a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of myocardial dysfunction, and particularly diastolic dysfunction, in patients with T2DM.

Yield of Bone Scintigraphy Screening for Transthyretin-related Cardiac Amyloidosis in Different Conditions: Methodological Issues and Clinical Implications.
Transthyretin-related cardiac amyloidosis (TTR-CA) is thought to be particularly common in specific at-risk conditions, including aortic stenosis (AS), heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and left ventricular hypertrophy or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (LVH/HCM). ⋯ Screening with bone scintigraphy found an 11-15% TTR-CA prevalence in patients with AS, HFpEF and LVH/HCM. AS and HFpEF patients were typically older than 80 years at TTR-CA diagnosis and frequently accompanied by comorbidities. Several studies showed limitations in the application of recommended TTR-CA diagnostic algorithm, which should be addressed in future prospective studies.

Circ-ACAP2 facilitates the progression of colorectal cancer through mediating miR-143-3p/FZD4 axis.
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play crucial roles in multiple cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Here, we explored the role of circRNA ArfGAP with coiled-coil, ankyrin repeat and PH domains 2 (circ-ACAP2) in the progression and radioresistance of CRC. ⋯ Circ-ACAP2 contributed to the development and radioresistance of CRC partly through targeting miR-143-3p/FZD4 axis, which provided novel potential diagnostic and therapeutic targets for CRC.
