Factors influencing oral anticoagulant use in patients newly diagnosed with atrial fibrillation.
We investigated factors that influenced oral anticoagulant (OAC) initiation and choice in Australian general practice patients newly diagnosed with AF. ⋯ The proportion of newly diagnosed patients with AF initiated on OAC increased markedly following the introduction of the DOACs. Of those initiated, 9 in 10 were receiving a DOAC at the end of the study period. There is potential underuse in women and individuals with dementia.

Higher ACE2 expression levels in epicardial than subcutaneous stromal cells from patients with cardiovascular disease: Diabetes and obesity as possible enhancer.
Obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease are associated with COVID-19 risk and severity. Because epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) expresses ACE2, we wanted to identify the main factors associated with ACE2 levels and its cleavage enzyme, ADAM17, in epicardial fat. ⋯ Epicardial fat cells expressed higher levels of ACE2 in comparison with subcutaneous fat cells, which is enhanced by diabetes and obesity presence in patients with cardiovascular disease. Both might be risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Age at menarche (AAM) is an important indicator of physiological development in women, and delayed AAM has been associated with chronic illnesses. We investigated predictive factors at diagnosis that influence AAM in adolescents with chronic respiratory diseases. ⋯ AAM in patients with CF and asthma was significantly higher than in healthy adolescents, and menses abnormalities were observed in the last two groups. Inflammation influences the reproductive function in chronic respiratory disease.
