Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffects of tocilizumab on neutrophil function and kinetics.
Decreases in circulating neutrophils (polymorphonuclear leucocytes, PMNs) have been reported in patients treated with the anti-interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R) antibody tocilizumab (TCZ); the mechanism for this is unclear. We hypothesize that TCZ reduces circulating neutrophils by affecting margination and/or bone marrow trafficking without affecting neutrophil function or apoptosis. ⋯ We have demonstrated for the first time in humans that IL-6R blockade affects neutrophil trafficking to the bone marrow without influencing neutrophil functional capacity.

Hepatic CXCL16 is increased in gallstone accompanied with liver injury.
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between circulating soluble C-X-C chemokine ligand 16 (CXCL16) levels and clinical characteristics of gallstone. ⋯ Serum CXCL16 levels are significantly increased in patients with gallstone, and are independently associated with liver injury in Chinese population, suggesting that CXCL16 may be a biomarker of liver injury in subjects with gallstone or NAFLD.

Multicenter StudyLiver enzymes are not directly involved in atrial fibrillation: a prospective cohort study.
Epidemiological evidence proposes the direct involvement of the liver enzymes in atrial fibrillation. These relationships are controversial and mechanistically unclear. As part of the British Regional Heart Study, we investigated whether change in liver enzymes over time associates with atrial fibrillation in men initially free of this heart condition. ⋯ The direct relationship between atrial fibrillation and liver enzymes is absent and depends, at least in part, on the progression of heart failure as captured by N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide.

ReviewAnti-inflammatory effects of exercise: role in diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Persistent inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). ⋯ Physical activity represents a natural, strong anti-inflammatory strategy with minor side effects and should be integrated in the management of patients with cardiometabolic diseases.

Multicenter StudyThe relationship of serum adipokines with malnutrition inflammation score in haemodialysis.
Protein-energy wasting is a prevalent disorder in haemodialysis. Zinc-α2-glycoprotein (ZAG) and adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) are novel adipokines with recognized lipolytic effects and proposed role in metabolic homoeostasis. This study was conducted to investigate the association of ZAG and ATGL concentrations with malnutrition-inflammation score (MIS) and metabolic profile of patients with haemodialysis. ⋯ The serum concentrations of ATGL, but not ZAG, were significantly higher in MW compared to NMW group. Each unit increase in ATGL concentrations was correlated with 21% increase in the odds of wasting severity. ATGL might play a role in wasting pathogenesis and metabolic profile in haemodialysis.
