IGF-1 and NT-proBNP in a black and white population: The SABPA study.
Black populations exhibit lower concentrations of the cardioprotective peptide, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and are more prone to develop hypertensive heart disease than whites. We therefore determined whether lower IGF-1 in black individuals relates to a marker of cardiac overload and systolic dysfunction, namely N-terminal prohormone B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). ⋯ Contrary to the white group, we found no association between NT-proBNP and IGF-1 in black adults. Our findings suggest that SBP and other factors may play a greater contributory role in cardiac pathology in blacks.

Healthy overweight/obese youth: early osteosarcopenic obesity features.
Osteosarcopenic obesity was recently described as a variant phenotype of obesity, mainly observed in old age. This nested case-control study was performed to detect the differences in body composition between young, healthy overweight/obese and healthy lean populations of both genders. Our null hypothesis was that except for the fat mass, there would be absence of body composition differences, namely skeletal muscle and bone masses, between the groups. ⋯ Our study suggests that 'osteosarcopenic' elements exist even in very young populations. These may represent a 'precursor' or forme fruste of the osteosarcopenic obesity phenotype in young healthy overweight/obese subjects, who may progressively develop osteosarcopenia in its full form at an older age. Our study highlights the significance of body composition analysis in medical practice, improving prevention and alleviating later health-related economic burden.

Triglyceride-rich lipoprotein metabolism in women: roles of apoC-II and apoC-III.
Experimental data suggest that apolipoprotein (apo) C-II and C-III regulate triglyceride-rich lipoprotein (TRL) metabolism, but there are limited studies in humans. We investigated the metabolic associations of TRLs with apoC-II and apoC-III concentrations and kinetics in women. ⋯ In women, plasma apoC-II and apoC-III concentrations are regulated by their respective PR and are significant, independent determinants of the kinetics and plasma concentrations of TRLs.

Observational StudyNutritional predictors of mortality after discharge in elderly patients on a medical ward.
Malnutrition in elderly inpatients hospitalized on medical wards is a significant public health concern. The aim of this study was to investigate nutritional markers as mortality predictors following discharge in hospitalized medical elderly patients. ⋯ The MNA and BIA-derived phase angle are reasonable tools to identify malnourished patients at high mortality risk and may represent useful markers in intervention trials in this high-risk subgroup.

Familial hypercholesterolaemia: cholesterol efflux and coronary disease.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) risk inversely associates with levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The protective effect of HDL is thought to depend on its functionality, such as its ability to induce cholesterol efflux. ⋯ A higher plasma cholesterol efflux capacity and higher S1P and apoM content of HDL in asymptomatic FH patients may play a role in their apparent protection from premature CHD.
