Kidney function crucially affects B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), N-terminal proBNP and their relationship.
B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal proBNP (NT-proBNP) are useful biomarkers in the management of heart failure. Both peptides are secreted into the circulation after cleavage of their precursor proBNP and excreted from the kidney in the active form or as metabolites. We investigated effects of kidney function on the levels and association of these peptides. ⋯ Although circulating levels of both BNP and NT-proBNP increased with deteriorating kidney function, the impact of kidney function on NT-proBNP was much more pronounced than that on BNP. Kidney function should be taken into account when interpreting data on BNP, NT-proBNP and their relationship.

Mycophenolic acid attenuates the tumour necrosis factor-α-mediated proinflammatory response in endothelial cells by blocking the MAPK/NF-κB and ROS pathways.
Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) has beneficial effects in cardiac transplant patients beyond the suppression of tissue rejection. Moreover, mycophenolic acid (MPA), its active metabolite, has been associated with positive effects on atherosclerosis in animal models. The attachment of leukocytes to the vascular endothelium and the subsequent migration of these cells into the vessel wall are early events in inflammation and atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of MPA on tumour necrosis-α (TNF-α)-induced, endothelial cell proinflammatory responses and the underlying mechanisms. ⋯ These results suggest that, in addition to the prevention of rejection, MPA may be a promising approach for the treatment of inflammatory vascular disease.

Incretins, amylin and other gut-brain axis hormones in children with coeliac disease.
Previous research indicated that coeliac disease (CD) is associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). However, the gut-brain axis peptide hormones secretion has not been evaluated so far in patients with CD prior to treatment initiation or under treatment, irrespective of patients having concomitant T1DM or not. The aim of the study was therefore to evaluate these gut hormones at the preprandial levels of patients with CD before and under treatment. ⋯ Our study revealed a different secretion pattern of gut-brain axis hormones in children with CD compared with HC. The alterations in the axis were more pronounced in children with both CD and T1DM.

ReviewThe real role of prediagnostic high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the cancer risk: a concise review.
In several observational and clinical studies, the association between serum cholesterol levels and cancer is still unsettled although serum total cholesterol has been associated with increased mortality from cancer. Moreover, the importance of abnormal levels of serum lipid components as the main features of dyslipidemia and the risk of individual cancers is unclear. The prevalence of dyslipidemia is increasing worldwide but, the precise aetiology of the link between risk of cancer and the behaviour of lipid profile, prior diagnosis, has yet to be determinated. Low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) at baseline of many of the studies analyzed has to be taken into account, and continued low levels of HDL without explanation should be considered by clinicians. ⋯ The findings exposed in this review suggest that the association with low HDL levels at baseline of different studies of cancer risk is shared among many types of cancer, and it is mainly linked to obesity and inflammation, suggesting a common pathway.

18F-FDG PET/CT as a predictor of hereditary head and neck paragangliomas.
Hereditary head and neck paragangliomas (HNPGLs) account for at least 35% of all HNPGLs, most commonly due to germline mutations in SDHx susceptibility genes. Several studies about sympathetic paragangliomas have shown that (18)F-FDG PET/CT was not only able to detect and localize tumours, but also to characterize tumours ((18)F-FDG uptake being linked to SDHx mutations). However, the data concerning (18)F-FDG uptake specifically in HNPGLs have not been addressed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between (18)F-FDG uptake and the SDHx mutation status in HNPGL patients. ⋯ (18)F-FDG uptake in HNPGL is strongly dependent on patient genotype. Thus, the degree of (18)F-FDG uptake in these tumours can be used clinically to help identify patients in whom SDHx mutations should be suspected.
