Given the importance of poor nutrition as a cause for human chronic disease, it is surprising that nutrition receives so little attention during medical school training and in clinical practice. Specific vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and water in the diet are essential for health, and deficiencies lead or contribute to many diseases. ⋯ COVID-19 has altered access to nutritious foods for millions and increased awareness of the importance of diet and immune function. An improved appreciation for nutrition will improve the outcomes of clinical care.

ReviewBehavioral Approaches to Nutrition Counseling in the Primary Care Setting.
Primary care providers encounter significant time and resource constraints in their efforts to provide patients with behavioral nutrition counseling. Here, several evidence-based and low-burden strategies are identified that may be used in the primary care setting to assist patients in making dietary changes toward improved health. These strategies include brief dietary intake screening, core elements of motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy, and recommendation for normalized eating.

Nonadherence to medical treatment is exceptionally common and associated with poor clinical outcomes, a negative impact on quality of life, and a large financial burden on health care systems. This article first addresses key contributors to nonadherence from patient-specific, treatment-specific, and health care system-specific factors. Second, it outlines tools for the practicing clinician to identify, evaluate, and manage nonadherence across the spectrum of chronic disease in partnership with patients.
