Acceptability and consumption of tofu as a meat alternative among secondary school boarders in Enugu State, Nigeria: Implications for nutritional counseling and education.
Tofu, a food made of condensed soymilk that originated in China, has both nutritional and health benefits. The main objective of this study was to determine the acceptability and consumption of tofu as a meat alternative among students in boarding secondary schools in Enugu State, Nigeria. In this study, the authors adopted a cross-sectional analytic design. ⋯ Also, it was found that gender did not significantly moderate the association between recognition of benefits of tofu and consumption of tofu among students. Further research is needed to identify the level of tofu acceptability and consumption among adolescents in boarding secondary schools in other states of Nigeria. Further research on factors influencing how recognition of benefits of tofu is associated with its acceptability among the Nigerian student population can have implications for nutritional counseling and regional health.

Dexmedetomidine combined with local anesthetics in thoracic paravertebral block: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Dexmedetomidine (DEX) improves postoperative pain scores and prolongs the duration of blockage when combined with local anesthetics (LAs) for neuraxial and brachial plexus block; however, there is little information about the effectiveness of DEX as an adjuvant to LAs in paravertebral block (PVB). Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of DEX combined with LAs in PVB. ⋯ PROSPERO registration number CRD42018090251.

The impact of prophylactic cranial irradiation for post-operative patients with limited stage small cell lung cancer.
To evaluate the impact of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) on the prognosis of patients who received definitive surgery for surgically resected small cell lung cancer (SCLC). A retrospective analysis was performed on post-operative SCLC patients treated in Zhejiang Cancer Hospital from January 2003 to December 2015. According to the treatment modality, patients were allocated to PCI group and non-PCI group. ⋯ The 2-year OS rates were 78.0% and 38.0% in PCI and non-PCI group respectively (P = .023). The brain metastasis-free survival (BMFS) rate at 2-year in PCI group was significantly higher than those of non-PCI group (89.0% vs 53.0%, respectively, P = .026). In conclusion, PCI might be suggested for limited SCLC patients who received definitive surgery.

Comparison of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors and pioglitazone combination therapy versus pioglitazone monotherapy in type 2 diabetes: A system review and meta-analysis.
Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor and pioglitazone combination therapy have been widely used for patients with inadequate glycemic control on monotherapy. This meta-analysis assessed the efficacy and safety of this combination therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). ⋯ DPP-4 inhibitor and pioglitazone combination therapy provided better glycemic control, both according to HbA1c and FPG levels, than pioglitazone monotherapy. Safety analysis showed well tolerance of combination therapy, even in hypoglycemic and edema AEs. However, additional large-scale, high quality, long-term follow-up clinical trials are necessary to confirm its long-term effectiveness.

Influence of magnesium sulfate on hemodynamic responses during laparoscopic cholecystectomy: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies.
The impact of magnesium sulfate on hemodynamic responses during laparoscopic cholecystectomy remains controversial. We conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the influence of magnesium sulfate on hemodynamic responses for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. ⋯ Magnesium sulfate can reduce blood pressure, but with the increase in extubation time for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
