The effect of Imaginary Working Qigong on the psychological well-being of college students: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.
College students are special populations that are particularly prone to have significantly high level of psychological distress than their community peers. Apparently, the best way to manage stress and mental state is through self-care. The characteristic of Qigong is self-directed and self-healing, which is a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise, which has the potential as a stress management intervention. Imaginary Working Qigong, as a kind of static Qigong, is more perception-oriented and can bring about benign sensations of mind and body so as to eliminate stress completely and induce physiological and mental relaxation. In this study protocol, we will systematically examine the feasibility and acceptability of Imaginary Working Qigong on psychological outcomes of the college students and deeply explore molecular biological mechanisms underlying the effects of mind adjustment induced Imaginary Working Qigong. ⋯ The study protocol and consent forms have been approved by the medical and animal experiment ethic committee of BUCM (approval number: BJZYYDX-LL2014005).

Crystalloid fluid administration was associated with outcomes in pediatric patients with severe sepsis or septic shock.
Intravenous fluid prescription plays an important role in sepsis management, which may be associated with patient prognosis. The objective of the present study was to determine if the administration of crystalloid fluids is associated with clinical outcome for patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. The medical records of 79 patients with severe sepsis or septic shock at an academic tertiary care hospital between 2011 and 2016 were reviewed retrospectively. ⋯ The total length of stay in the PICU was longer for patients who received high volume crystalloid fluid (15.8 ± 7.8 days) than for patients who received the lower volume (9.7 ± 5.3 days, P = .026). A higher amount of 3-day crystalloid administration was unfavorable for postoperative outcomes in children with sepsis and septic shock; these patients experienced higher PICU mortality, longer PICU stays, and more ventilator days. More study on the benefits and harms of fluid in children are needed to improve patient safety and the quality of care that would facilitate better outcomes.

A multi-facet comparative analysis of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders in patients with seropositive and seronegative AQP4-IgG.
Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), a rare, serious, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS), is associated with immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies targeting aquaporin-4 (AQP4-IgG). This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical features of 67 patients. 49 and 18 of 67 cases (male/female: 11/56) were AQP4-IgG (+) and AQP4-IgG (-), respectively. The initial symptoms were optic neuritis [n = 34, AQP4-IgG (+)/(-): 31/3], myelitis [n = 18, AQP4-IgG(+)/(-): 13/5], co-occurrence of ON and myelitis [n = 15, AQP4-IgG (+)/(-): 5/10]. ⋯ There was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups in terms of ages, and magnetic resonance imaging findings, but the patients had a significant difference (P <.05) in sex, the course of disease and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores after drug treatment. Patients with AQP4-IgG (-) are likely to have a better prognosis and a favorable monophasic course.

Efficacy and safety of electromagnetic acupuncture using an electromagnetic therapy stimulator (Whata153) for the treatment of chronic low back pain: Study protocol for a single-center, parallel-arm, randomized clinical trial.
Chronic low back pain is one of the major conditions causing serious personal and social difficulties in modern society. There are several noninvasive therapies for chronic low back pain; however, the effects of electromagnetic acupuncture have not been studied. Here, we describe the protocol for a study that will investigate the efficacy and safety of electromagnetic acupuncture for patients with chronic low back pain. ⋯ The results of this trial are expected to provide important clinical information on the efficacy and safety of electromagnetic acupuncture for patients with chronic low back pain.

Oropharyngeal mucositis is considered to be an inevitable and the most troubling side effect of head and neck irradiation, which is caused by the direct toxic action of radiation on oral mucosa. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated the efficacy of zinc sulfate in prevention of radiation-induced oropharyngeal mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer. However, the definite conclusions have not been confirmed. The systematic review and meta-analysis will be performed to comprehensively evaluate whether zinc sulfate is effective in prevention of radiation-induced oropharyngeal mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer. ⋯ As the first systematic review and metaanalysis, the present study will elucidate current evidence of the role of oral zinc for the prevention and treatment of radiation-induced oropharyngeal mucositis in the head and neck cancer.
