Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic versus open surgery for rectal cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
The present meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic surgery (LS) versus open surgery (OS) for rectal cancer. ⋯ LS for rectal cancer was as safe and effective as OS in terms of long-term outcomes, but with lower postoperative complication.

Successful treatment of malignant thymoma with sacrum metastases: A case report and review of literature.
Malignant thymoma in the spine is a rare disease without standard curative managements so far. The objective of this article is to report a very rare case of recurrent malignant thymoma with sacrum metastases causing severe lumbosacral pain, which was presented with acute radiculopathy and treated with 2 operations combined with stabilization and cement augmentation. The management of these unique cases is not well-documented. ⋯ This article emphasizes metastatic thymoma of the spine, although rare, should be part of the differential when the patient presents with back pain and radiculopathy. We recommend the posterior approach for spinal decompression of the metastatic thymoma when the tumor has caused neurological deficits. Osteoplasty by cement augmentation is also a good choice for surgical treatment.

An ectopic adrenocortical adenoma in renal hilum presenting with Cushing's syndrome: A case report and literature review.
Ectopic adrenal tissue is the adrenal rests along the path from gonads to adrenal glands during embryogenesis. Ectopic adrenocortical adenoma is a rare disease represented with over-production of cortisol by the ectopic adrenocortical tissue. ⋯ Ectopic adrenocortical adenoma is difficult to diagnose due to its low incidence, and the ectopic rests in renal hilum could be misdiagnosed as renal cell carcinoma. This case reminds clinicians to be aware of ectopic site in the diagnosis of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) independent Cushing's syndrome. Immunohistochemical stain may assist in evaluating the origin of the ectopic rests. A certain rate of local recurrence indicated the need of long-term follow-up.

We determined the value of F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) for the assessment of preoperative lymph node metastases in patients with esophageal cancer. ⋯ The PET/CT has a high diagnostic specificity but its diagnostic sensitivity is low; thus, its diagnosis findings cannot accurately reflect the lymph node status.

Hemobilia caused by pancreatic arteriovenous malformation: A case report and literature review.
Hemobilia caused by arteriovenous malformation is extremely rare but could be lethal. To date, most reports have been single-case reports, and no literature reviews are available. ⋯ Arteriovenous malformation is a rare cause of hemobilia, but it could lead to life threatening bleeding. Transarterial embolization could be effective to control the bleeding temporarily, however repeated hemorrhage may occur. Surgical resection may be a better option.
