Preclinical evidence suggests that metformin, a widely used antidiabetic drug, may have a sensitizing effect on platinum. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the survival outcomes for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using metformin during platinum-based chemotherapy. The clinicopathological parameters and survival data of 75 NSCLC patients with T2DM from January 2008 to December 2011 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. ⋯ After adjusting gender, age, smoking status, tumor stage, tumor histology, and differentiation, multivariate analysis showed that metformin was not associated with the OS in NSCLC patients treated with concurrent platinum-based chemotherapy (hazard ratio: 1.071, 95% confidence interval: 0.577-1.986, P = .828). Our results indicated that metformin exposure had no significant effect on OS in NSCLC patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy. Further studies are warranted to evaluate whether metformin could affect the survival of NSCLC patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy.

Lymph node detection in prostate cancer is challenging and critical to determine treatment policy. Choline PET/CT (positron emission tomography/computed tomography) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been used for the evaluation of lymph node metastasis in patients with prostate cancer for the past decade. However, only limited patients underwent direct comparison studies. ⋯ Choline PET/CT performed better than MRI imaging in evaluating the lymph nodes metastasis of prostate cancer patients and had the potential to be broadly applied in clinical practice.

Latanoprost is quiet new formulation that is approved for the treatment of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). However, no updated systematic review has addressed its efficacy for POAG. This systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aims to assess its efficacy and safety for the treatment of patients with POAG. ⋯ PROSPERO CRD42018115416.

The significant impact of age on the clinical outcomes of laparoscopic appendectomy: Results from the Polish Laparoscopic Appendectomy multicenter large cohort study.
Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common surgical emergency and can occur at any age. Nearly all of the studies comparing outcomes of appendectomy between younger and older patients set cut-off point at 65 years. In this multicenter observational study, we aimed to compare laparoscopic appendectomy for AA in various groups of patients with particular interest in the elderly and very elderly in comparison to younger adults. ⋯ Older patients are at high risk both in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative period. The differences are visible already at the age of 40 years old. Since delayed diagnosis and postponed surgery result in the development of complicated appendicitis, more effort should be placed in improving treatment patterns for the elderly and their clinical outcome.

Recent studies have used diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) to demonstrate that central poststroke pain (CPSP) was related to spinothalamic tract (STT) injury in patients with stroke. However, few studies have been reported about delayed-onset CPSP due to degeneration of the STT following a stroke. ⋯ Diagnostic importance of performing a DTT-based evaluation of the STT in patients exhibiting delayed-onset CPSP following intracerebral hemorrhage.
