We report on a patient with a positron emission tomography/computed tomography scans (PET/CT)-negative malignant spine tumor, which had even caused a pathologic fracture, and was eventually confirmed on surgical biopsy. ⋯ Spine surgeons should bear in mind that malignant spine tumors could be misinterpreted as benign on PET/CT.

The aim of this case-control study was to clarify the relationship between uracil N-glycosylase (UNG) rs3219218 and rs246079 genotypes and risk of cervical squamous cell cancer (CSCC). Modified polymerase chain reaction-mismatch amplification (MA-PCR) was applied for genotyping UNG rs3219218 (A/G) and UNG rs246079 (A/G) polymorphisms in 400 CSCC, 400 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) III, and 1200 normal controls. We observed no association between the UNG rs3219218 (A/G) polymorphism and risk of CIN III or CSCC. ⋯ G allele or G carrier (GG + AG) genotype was identified as a high-risk factor in CSCC (OR = 1.67) while in the CIN III group, no major differences were evident relative to the control group (OR = 1.45). A particularly high level of enrichment grouping was evident according to the number of sexual partners in the CIN III (P = .036) and CSCC (P = .001) groups. Our data clearly suggest an association between UNG rs246079 (A/G) and CSCC carcinogenesis, supporting the potential application of this polymorphism as a genetic biomarker for early prediction of cervical carcinoma.

Upregulated delta-like protein 3 (DLL3) functions as a Notch ligand and has been a target for cancer therapy. The present study assessed DLL3 expression as a tumor marker for endometrial cancer. RNA-Seq expression data and clinicopathologic records from 545 patients with endometrial cancer were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas database. ⋯ Furthermore, upregulated DLL3 expression was also associated with a median overall survival of 112 months (HR = 1.85, confidence internal 1.202-2.846, P = .005). The multivariate analysis showed that DLL3 overexpression and advanced tumor stages, grades, and lymph node metastases were all independent prognostic predictors for endometrial cancer. The DLL3 expression could be a potential and novel tumor marker for early diagnosis and an independent predictor of poor survival for patients with endometrial cancer.

Corneal dysplastic melanosis associated with recurrent corneal erosions: A case report.
Pigmented lesions of conjunctiva and cornea can be observed in various conditions, from the benign nevus to malignant melanoma. Pigmented acquired melanosis (PAM) is one of them, which is a neoplastic proliferation with malignant transformation potential of melanocytes. However, to our knowledge, there has been no report as to a disturbance of corneal barrier function caused by PAM. Here we report a case of corneal PAM which led to recurrent corneal erosions. ⋯ Our report suggests that primary acquired dysplastic corneal melanosis may cause epithelial dysfunction resulting in recurrent corneal epithelial erosions.

The aim of the study was to explore the role of parity, maternal age, medical interventions, and birth weight with respect to labor duration and cervical dilation. A total of 1601 pregnant women who had a singleton term gestation, spontaneous onset of labor, vertex presentation, vaginal delivery, and a normal perinatal outcome were reviewed. The retrospective study was conducted in patients from West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University during June 2008 to June 2013. ⋯ Labor was significantly shorter in multiparous women than that in nulliparous women. Increased birth weight significantly increased in the length of the active phase and the second stage among nulliparous women. The increase of age, artificial rupture of membranes, labor analgesia, and the increase of birth weight tends to increase the time of first stage of labor and total labor duration, whereas oxytocin could shorten it.
