Impact of reduced skeletal muscle volume on clinical outcome after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer: A retrospective study.
The aim of the study was to clarify the impact of reduced skeletal muscle volume on the morbidity of patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Malnutrition and reduced skeletal muscle volume, that is, presarcopenia, are reportedly associated with a high frequency of postoperative complications after esophagectomy. However, it remains unclear whether the reduction of skeletal muscle volume following esophagectomy may affect clinical outcomes including pneumonia occurred beyond the preoperative period. ⋯ Multivariate analysis demonstrated that age and postoperative PI reduction were independently associated with the incidence of pneumonia 6 months after surgery (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.92, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.16-7.32, P = .02; HR = 3.25, 95% CI 1.15-9.15, P = .03, respectively). Patients with pneumonia 6 months after surgery had significantly poorer overall survival than those without pneumonia at that time. Postoperative reduction of skeletal muscle volume was independently associated with the occurrence of pneumonia beyond the preoperative period, which might indicate the importance of a postoperative nutritional support after perioperative period in esophageal cancer patients.

Primary malignant mixed mullerian tumors of the fallopian tube is very rare and has only 1 case in the current literature with cervix metastasis. ⋯ Primary malignant mixed mullerian tumors of the fallopian tube can be located by magnetic resonance image examination, which may also offer several diagnostic tips according to changes in signal and enhancement. When combined with pathological findings, qualitative diagnosis can be determined. Surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy are considered as effective methods. Our paper discussed its epidemiology, clinical symptoms, pathologic characters, therapeutic method as well as magnetic resonance imaging findings suggesting the diagnosis and differential diagnosis, including precontrast scan, contrast scan and diffusion weighted image and provided magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of primary malignant mixed mullerian tumors of the fallopian tube described in other literatures.

Comparison of clinical and radiological outcomes between modified Gallie graft fusion-wiring technique and posterior cervical screw constructs for Type II odontoid fractures.
The aim of this study was to compare clinical and radiological outcomes between modified Gallie graft fusion-wiring technique and posterior cervical screw constructs for Type II odontoid fractures, and hope to provide references in decision making and surgical planning for both spinal surgeons and surgically treated patients. This is a retrospective study. By retrieving the medical records from January 2005 to July 2015 in our hospital, 53 Type II odontoid fracture patients were reviewed. ⋯ We noted no significant difference in visual analog scale score, neck stiffness, and neurological status at final follow-up. The medical expense was less in Wiring group; the patient satisfaction was lower in the Wiring group than that in the Screw group. The modified Gallie graft fusion-wiring technique provided solid fusion and stabilization for patients with Type II odontoid fractures, Gallie graft fusion-wiring resulted in less surgery time, less medical expense, but lower patient satisfaction when compared with the posterior cervical screw constructs.

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a heterogeneous malignant hematologic disease with median overall survival ranging from six months to more than ten years. Solid tumor rarely occurs in combination with MDS and the underlying pathogenesis and prognostic significance still remain controversial. ⋯ We reviewed the mechanism of MDS complicated by solid tumor and concluded the potential mechanisms of this patient. The interactions between potential factors may play a role in oncogenesis which, however, need an in-depth study of its operating mechanism.

Primary malignancy in giant cell tumor of bone (PMGCTB) is extremely unusual. PMGCTB in the thoracic vertebrae is particularly rare. ⋯ PMGCTB is difficult to distinguish from giant cell tumor of bone. PMGCTB should be considered when lesions appear with multiple fluid-fluid levels and soft tissue mass.
