To evaluate the ability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to predict pathologic complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (CRT) in patients with clinical T1/T2 rectal cancer to indicate candidates for organ-saving strategies. Between 2012 and 2016, 38 patients with clinical T1/T2 rectal cancer received neoadjuvant CRT. Radiologic complete response (rCR) was assigned when dense fibrotic tissue without tumor signal intensity was observed on post-CRT MRI. ⋯ The association between rCR and the mural extent of the primary tumor, pCR, and pathologic T stage were analyzed. In rCR patients, the pCR rate was higher; the odds of achieving pCR were 8.00 times higher than for non-rCR patients (P = .02). rCR patients were also more likely to have early-stage cancer than non-rCR patients (P = 0.01). Patients with partial extent of the primary tumor on post-CRT MRI were more likely to be diagnosed with early-stage cancer than those with transmural extent (P = .01).rCR indicated by post-CRT MRI can be used as a supportive factor to predict pCR after neoadjuvant CRT in patients with clinical T1/T2 rectal cancer and can guide management decisions around organ-saving treatments.

The role of a chest computed tomography severity score in coronavirus disease 2019 pneumonia.
The chest computed tomography (CT) characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are important for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. The aim of this study was to investigate chest CT findings in COVID-19 patients in order to determine the optimal cut-off value of a CT severity score that can be considered a potential prognostic indicator of a severe/critical outcome. The CT findings were evaluated by means of a severity score that included the extent (0-4 grading scale) and nature (0-4 grading scale) of CT abnormalities. ⋯ The mean CT severity score was 63.95 in the severe/critical group, and 35.62 in the mild/typical group (P < .001). ROC curve analysis showed that a CT severity score of 38 predicted the development of severe/critical symptoms. A CT severity score can help the risk stratification of COVID-19 patients.

Liver transplantation is the treatment of choice for end-stage liver diseases. However, early allograft dysfunction (EAD) is frequently encountered and associated with graft loss or mortality after transplantation. This study aimed to establish a predictive model of EAD after living donor liver transplantation. ⋯ The calibration curves for the probability of EAD presented an acceptable agreement between the prediction by the nomogram and the actual incidence. In conclusion, the study developed a new nomogram for predicting the risk of EAD following living donor liver transplantation. This model may help clinicians to determine individual risk of EAD following living donor liver transplantation.

The agents used in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) might affect the oral health of cancer patients. The study aims to assess the changes in the levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA) in saliva and blood, during first 22 days of intensive chemotherapy of ALL in children. Saliva and blood samples were taken from 24 patients, including 13 boys and 11 girls (age range: 4 - 17 years) on days 1, 8 and 22 of treatment. ⋯ Four children suffered from oral mucositis graded 1 or higher between days 8 and 22. Chemotherapy given during the treatment of childhood ALL is associated with a reduction in the level of salivary immunoglobulin A. Prevention of the drop of salivary IgA may diminish the risk of occurrence of acute mucosal complications.

Unknown origin pneumonia has been furiously spreading since the late of December 2019, subsequently spread to approximately all provinces and areas in China and many countries, which was announced as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by World Health Organization (WHO). The studies on 2019 Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19) conducted from various fields around the world. Herein, the objective of the present study is to summarize the etiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, image findings, traceability analysis, and drug development of COVID-19. ⋯ This systemic review will provide high-quality evidence to summarize etiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, image findings, traceability analysis, drug development in patients with COVID-19.
