This study was performed to examine the epidemiological features of maxillofacial fracture, including the incidence, causes, age and sex distribution, methods of treatment, and prognosis, in a local area. A retrospective study was performed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of 829 patients with maxillofacial fractures treated in a hospital in northern China from August 2011 to July 2019. Sex, age, etiology, fracture site, and treatment method were obtained from the medical records. ⋯ Traffic accidents were the main cause of maxillofacial fractures, followed by falling. Open surgery with internal fixation was the leading treatment choice. Both functional and esthetic outcomes should be considered in the treatment of maxillofacial fractures.

Despite the availability of a series of tests, detection of chronic traumatic osteomyelitis is still exhausting in clinical practice. We hypothesized that machine learning based on computed-tomography (CT) images would provide better diagnostic performance for extremity traumatic chronic osteomyelitis than the serological biomarker alone. A retrospective study was carried out to collect medical data from patients with extremity traumatic osteomyelitis according to the criteria of musculoskeletal infection society. ⋯ Meanwhile, machine learning (88.0%) demonstrated highest sensitivity when compared with CRP (50.6%), ESR (73.0%), and D-dimer (51.7%). Considering the specificity, machine learning (77.0%) is better than CRP (59.4%) and ESR (62.2%), but not D-dimer (83.8%). Our findings indicated that machine learning based on CT images is an effective and promising avenue for detection of chronic traumatic osteomyelitis in the extremity.

Intranasal dexmedetomidine versus oral chloral hydrate for diagnostic procedures sedation in infants and toddlers: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Intranasal dexmedetomidine is a relatively new way to sedate young children undergoing nonpainful diagnostic procedures. We performed a meta-analysis to compare the efficacy and safety of intranasal dexmedetomidine in young children with those of oral chloral hydrate, which has been a commonly used method for decades. ⋯ Our meta-analysis revealed that intranasal dexmedetomidine is possibly a more effective and acceptable sedation method for infants and toddlers undergoing diagnostic procedures than oral chloral hydrate. Additionally, it shows similar safety profile and could be a potential alternative to oral chloral hydrate.

Successful reconstruction after tumor resection facilitates rapid recovery and retention of good quality of life, and this is important for a successful operation. This study aimed to analyze and compare the application and efficacy of xenogeneic acellular dermal matrix (xeno-ADM) and abdominal skin graft in hypopharynx reconstruction. This is a retrospective cohort study that included 25 patients with posterior hypopharyngeal wall cancer who underwent partial hypopharyngectomy with laryngeal preservation. ⋯ All patients were successfully decannulated. Both xeno-ADM and abdominal skin grafts demonstrated good effects in the reconstruction of hypopharynx, but the recovery time of eating function in patients with xeno-ADM was faster, which may be due to rapid epithelialization. In addition, it avoids trauma of donor sites.

Wrist stiffness is a common sequela of distal radial fractures. Manipulation is generally used and effective, but problems exist, such as intense pain, swelling during the process of manipulation and long treatment period. Therefore, a combinative therapeutic strategy is necessary to benefit rehabilitation after distal radius fracture. Shi's Yi-Qi Bu-Shen Tong-Luo decoction (BTD) combined with wrist manipulation has been used in the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital Huangpu Branch in last few decades. BTD has potential therapeutic effects on rehabilitation after distal radius fracture, which should be evaluated by rigorous clinical trial. ⋯ Although BTD has shown effects on rehabilitation after distal radius fracture in the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital Huangpu Branch for decades, the universality of this efficacy needs evaluated. The results of this trial will provide a convincing evidence.
