Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women. The presence of systemic disease, with metastatic spread to distant sites such as the liver, considerably reduces the survival rate in CRC. Cancer stem cells contribute to the metastatic potential of CRC. However, the mechanism underlying metastasis in CRC remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to examine the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) in CRC stem cells in cases of liver metastases and assess their correlation with clinicopathological features. ⋯ High expression of miR-17 may contribute to liver metastasis in CRC. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of its downstream pathways could help in elucidating the mechanisms underlying liver metastases in CRC. However, additional studies are warranted to validate these findings.

Diode laser transscleral cyclophotocoagulation for uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome: A case report.
To report a case of diode laser transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (DLTSC) for uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome (UGH). ⋯ UGH syndrome is a severe complication of cataract extraction. IOL extraction has been the traditional approach to treatment. DLTSC can be an option when the IOL is slightly tilted.

Relationship between plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and arterial stiffness in elderly Chinese with non-dipper hypertension: An observational study.
Elderly individuals with non-dipper hypertension are at high risk of cardiovascular disease because of increased stiffness of peripheral arteries. Since, vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in elderly Chinese. We examined whether reduced plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] may help promote this stiffness. ⋯ Multivariate regression showed that age and 25(OH)D were independently related to CAVI, with each 1-ng/ml decrease in 25(OH)D associated with a CAVI increase of +0.04 m/s. Non-dipper hypertension is associated with vitamin D deficiency and reduced plasma levels of 25(OH)D. The latter may contribute to stiffening of peripheral arteries, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Stroke-like episodes (SLEs) are typical cerebral manifestations of certain mitochondrial disorders (MIDs). They are characterised by a vasogenic edema in a non-vascular distribution. PATIENTS CONCERNS:: none DIAGNOSIS:: SLEs show up on cerebral MRI as stroke-like lesions (SLLs), characterised by vasogenic edema in a non-vascular distribution. SLLs expand in the acute stage and regress during the chronic stage. They show hyperperfusion in the acute stage and hypoperfusion in the chronic stage. ⋯ SLLs are a frequent manifestation of MIDs. They undergo dynamic changes in the acute and chronic stage. They need to be differentiated from ischemic stroke as they are differentially treated.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate, considering the experiences from Chinese people, if slow transit constipation (STC) can be accurately diagnosed, choosing patients qualifying for surgery, subtotal colectomy with antiperistaltic cecosigmoidal anastomosis (STC-Anti-CSA) may come with more acceptable short and long-term outcomes. A retrospective study was performed at a department of colorectal and anal surgery. A cohort of 29 patients were coming with up to 5 years' follow-up care, who were in a diverse range of age, BMI, laxative medicine histories, including both males and females. ⋯ However, most patients were satisfied with their bowel patterns. STC-Anti-CSA can receive acceptable postoperative outcomes as long as the patients can be accurately diagnosed and classified as severe STC. Among the surgical procedures for STC, this procedure may be another suitable option, especially for Chinese people.
