High expression of guanine nucleotide-binding protein-like-3-like is associated with poor prognosis in esophageal cancer.
Guanine nucleotide-binding protein-like-3-like (GNL3L) is required for processing ribosomal pre-rRNA and cell proliferation and is upregulated in many types of cancer. This study is aimed to investigate the clinical significance of GNL3L in esophageal cancer. The mRNA and protein expression levels of GNL3L were determined by using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry, respectively. ⋯ The Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) databases also showed that GNL3L was upregulated in esophageal cancer, which was closely associated with an unfavorable prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer. Taken together, our findings suggest that GNL3L is upregulated in esophageal cancer, which is linked to the progression of the disease. As a result, GNL3L could be used as a biomarker for esophageal cancer.

Evaluation of serum insulin-like growth factor 1 and its significance in thyroid cancer: An observational study.
Serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is elevated in different cancers. However, relationships between serum IGF-1 and thyroid cancer (TC) are scarce. The present study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of serum IGF-1 in TC. ⋯ The serum IGF-1 cutoff value for a TC diagnosis was 216 ng/mL with a sensitivity of 53.2%, a specificity of 74.0%, a positive predictive value (PPV) of 83.5%, and an area under the curve was of 0.71. Serum IGF-1 was significantly correlated with tumor stage, size, and lymph node metastasis. Serum IGF-1 shows great potential as a laboratory marker for TC.

Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) is widely used as a treatment for periampullary tumors and pancreatic head tumors. However, postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), which significantly affects mortality and length of hospital stay of patients, remains one of the most common and serious complications following LPD. Though numerous technical modifications for pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) have been proposed, POPF is still the "Achilles heel" of LPD. ⋯ Double R anastomosis is potentially a safe, reliable, and rapid anastomosis with a low rate of POPF and post-pancreatectomy hemorrhage. It provides surgeons more options when performing LPD. However, its safety and effectiveness should be verified further by a larger prospective multicenter study.

Graft kidney hydronephrosis caused by transplant ureter inguinal hernia: A case report.
Ureteral obstruction of the graft kidney is a common complication of kidney transplantation. However, ureteral obstruction caused by inguinal hernia has rarely been reported. We present a rare case of ureteral obstruction with allograft dysfunction caused by an inguinal hernia. ⋯ The orientation of the graft kidney has a significant influence on the location of the ureter. Upward orientation of the hilum will result in superficial location of the ureter, rendering it close to the hernial sac and susceptible to incarceration. The transplant surgeon should be aware of such a presentation of graft dysfunction with inguinal hernia to prevent a delay in the diagnosis and graft loss.

Some patients with advanced colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) are not sensitive to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and as such, immunotherapy has become the most popular option for these patients. However, different patients respond differently to immunotherapy. Tumor mutational burden (TMB) has been used as a predictor of the response of advanced COAD patients to immunotherapy. ⋯ The results of functional enrichment analysis indicated that these 32 miRNAs were involved in many immune-related biological processes and tumor-related pathways. Therefore, this study demonstrated that differentially expressed miRNAs can be used to predict the TMB level, which can help identify advanced COAD patients who will respond well to immunotherapy. The miRNA-based model may be used as a tool to predict the TMB level in patients with advanced COAD.
