Respiratory muscle paralysis due to low cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) can lead to dysphagia. Noninvasive positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy can effectively treat this type of dysphagia. High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy can generate a low level of positive airway pressure resembling PAP therapy, it may improve the dysphagia. ⋯ HFNC oxygen therapy improved swallowing function in a patient with dysphagia associated with respiratory-muscle paralysis following a CSCI. It may have prolonged the apnea tolerance time during swallowing and may have improved the timing of swallowing. HFNC oxygen therapy can facilitate both indirect and direct early swallowing therapy to restore both swallowing and respiratory function.

For five years after the 2011 triple disaster (earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster) in Japan, the proportion of patients with undiagnosed symptomatic breast cancer remained elevated in the coastal area of Fukushima. These individuals experienced a prolonged interval from first symptom recognition to initial medical consultation (hereafter referred to as the patient interval). We aimed to investigate how this prolonged patient interval affected disease staging. ⋯ The proportion of patients with advanced-stage disease was 10.3% for < 3 months (7/68), 18.2% for 3-12 months (2/11), and 66.7% for more than 12 months (12/18). We found a similar trend using the multivariate logistic regression analyses. Prolongation of the patient interval was associated with advanced-stage disease among female patients with breast cancer.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect on the results of patients applied with arthroscopic full layer total layer rotator cuff repair made according to the shape and size of the tear. The study included a total of 120 patients applied with arthroscopic full layer rotator cuff repair as single or double row repair. The patients were separated into 3 groups of 40 according to the shape of the tear, as Group A (crescent type), Group B (U type), and Group C (L type). ⋯ In single row and double row repair of small and medium-sized tears of all shapes, no significant difference was determined in respect of the CM and UCLA scores (P > .05). No significant difference was determined between single and double row repair of crescent type tears of all sizes. In large U-shaped tears, the CM, ASES, and UCLA scores were determined to be high in double row repair.

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers, the symptoms and treatment of which can cause negative emotions like anxiety, depression, and cancer-related fatigue (CRF). Nonpharmacological interventions, serving as alternative therapies, can greatly alleviate CRF in lung cancer patients. Previous meta-analyses have reported nonpharmacological interventions of CRF in lung cancer patients, but the results may be conflicting, and the reporting and methodological qualities remain unknown. Moreover, there is limited evidence to identify efficient and safe non-pharmacological interventions of CRF in lung cancer patients. This study aims to assess the therapeutic efficacy of nonpharmacological interventions of CRF in lung cancer patients through a network meta-analysis. ⋯ DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/QRY42.

Poor oral hygiene can be potentially life-threatening in inpatients. However, no basic protocol on oral hygiene customized for inpatients exists, and lack of oral care related knowledge, attitude, and skills among caregivers could be detrimental to the general health of patients. This study sought to identify the oral care practices and oral health status of inpatients with varying physical activity limitations in a rehabilitation ward. ⋯ Scores for the swallowing, tongue, and total domains of bedside oral exam were poorer for patients who could not provide oral self-care (P < .01). The caries activity test indicated a moderate risk for both groups. Our findings suggest that an oral care protocol that considers the physical activity limitations in inpatients in rehabilitation wards is necessary to minimize negative influences on the systemic health of these patients.
