Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) with thrombocytosis and complex chromosomal translocation is extremely rare in clinical setting. Here, we reported the clinical and pathological characteristics of CML patients, which were characterized by thrombocytosis and complex Philadelphia chromosome translocation. Moreover, we also introduced our therapeutic schedule for this patient as well as review relative literature. ⋯ Imatinib might represent a preferred therapeutic option for CML patients with rare thrombocytosis and complex chromosomal translocation. In addition, BCR/ABL fusion gene examination in patients with thrombocytosis might represent an effective strategy to avoid the misdiagnosis of this specific CML population.

To examine the etiological distribution of pathogens in pediatric patients with severe pneumonia and analyze the drug resistance of major pathogen species. Nasopharyngeal secretion specimens were collected for bacterial culture from pediatric patients admitted to the Xiamen children's hospital who were diagnosed with severe pneumonia from January 2016 to December 2019. Pathogen species were detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, direct immunofluorescence, and bacterial culture and we examined the drug susceptibility of the bacterial pathogens. ⋯ In addition, we isolated 186 viral samples, of which the majority were respiratory syncytial virus (n = 90) and adenovirus (n = 70) as well as 142 Mycoplasma pneumonia samples. Gram-negative bacteria are dominant among the pathogens causing severe pneumonia in pediatric patients and the major pathogen species are resistant to a variety of antibiotics. Appropriate antibiotic use has an important role in preventing the emergence of resistant strains.

Currently no research is available on muscle and functional performance of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in China, even though both diseases have been reported to damage motor function. This single-center prospective study involves 55 males with COPD and T2DM and 46 males with COPD. Lung function, muscle strength and endurance of the upper limbs, and quadriceps strength of both legs were assessed using instruments. ⋯ Mean 6MW distances of COPD patients with T2DM were significantly worse (P < .05), and mean pulse rate (PR) increments of COPD patients with T2DM in 6MW test were significantly higher (P < .05). The combination of COPD and T2DM not only brings one more chronic disease to elderly patients but also significantly affects muscle strength and endurance as well as physical performance. Accordingly, in the management of chronic diseases, we recommend that clinicians as well as patients themselves actively control blood sugar and review them regularly with a view to reducing adverse effects on physical performance.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation of long non-coding RNA maternally expressed gene 3 (Lnc-MEG3) with disease features, treatment response, and survival in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. Among 92 de novo pediatric AML patients (before treatment and after 1 course of induction) and 40 controls, bone marrow mononuclear cells were obtained. Then, Lnc-MEG3 expression was determined by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction. ⋯ Furthermore, Lnc-MEG3 was of no difference before treatment between patients with and without CR, while elevated Lnc-MEG3 and change of Lnc-MEG3 after 1 course of treatment were associated with increased CR rate. Additionally, increased Lnc-MEG3 expression before treatment was associated with longer EFS but not OS, while enhanced Lnc-MEG3 expression after 1 course of treatment was correlated with both prolonged EFS and OS. Lnc-MEG3 may have clinical significance as a biomarker for assisting with disease management, treatment optimization, and prognosis improvement in pediatric AML patients.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Yu-Ping-Feng powder (YPFP) has been used to treat allergic rhinitis (AR) for centuries. However, the mechanisms underlying its effects or its molecular targets in AR treatment are yet to be elucidated. Therefore, the active compounds of YPFP and their targets were collected and identified from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology database. ⋯ MAPK1 was identified as the core gene, while others including RELA, AKT1, NFKBIA, IL6, and JUN, were also important in the gene-pathway network. Clearly, network pharmacology can be applied in revealing the molecular targets and mechanisms of action of complex herbal preparations. These findings suggested that YPFP could treat AR by regulating immunological functions, diminishing inflammation, and improving immunity through different pathways.
