Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. Paraoxonase-1 (PON1), circulates in blood bound to high-density lipoproteins and reduces systemic oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate PON1 serum concentration and PON1 arylesterase activity (AREase) in patients with AF. ⋯ The body mass index was also independently associated with PON1 values (P < .001). Only the high-density lipoproteins-cholesterol level was independently associated with AREase (P = .002). PON1 serum concentrations and AREase were diminished in patients with AF, and the presence of AF was independently associated with low PON1 values.

To investigate the hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and related factors among maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients in Anhui province in 2020, so as to compare with the results in 2014. The cases of 3025 MHD patients were investigated in 27 hemodialysis centers of Anhui province from January 2020 to December 2020. The data of age, sex, primary disease, dialysis age, dialysis mode, drug use and laboratory tests were collected and analyzed. ⋯ The multivariate logistic regression analysis results showed that male, longer duration of dialysis therapy, treatment with iron, higher triglyceride and albumin were protective factors of anemia, but older age was independent risk factors. The anemia treatment in MHD patients in Anhui province was significantly improved. Male, long dialysis age, use of iron, high serum albumin and triglyceride levels may be protective factors for Hb reaching standard level, and old age may be an independent risk factor.

Electroen cephalography correlates of word and non-word listening in children with specific language impairment: An observational study20F0.
Auditory processing in children diagnosed with speech and language impairment (SLI) is atypical and characterized by reduced brain activation compared to typically developing (TD) children. In typical speech and language development processes, frontal, temporal, and posterior regions are engaged during single-word listening, while for non-word listening, it is highly unlikely that perceiving or speaking them is not followed by frequent neurones' activation enough to form stable network connections. This study aimed to investigate the electrophysiological cortical activity of alpha rhythm while listening words and non-words in children with SLI compared to TD children. ⋯ Children with SLI showed a certain lack of alpha desynchronization in word and non-word listening compared with TD children. Non-word perception arouses more brain regions because of the unknown presence of the word stimuli. The lack of adequate alpha desynchronization is consistent with established difficulties in lexical and phonological processing at the behavioral level in children with SLI.

Metastasis is the major cause of death and failure of cancer chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer (BC). Activation of TGF-β/lncRNA-MALAT1/miR-200c has been reported to play an essential role during the metastasis of BC cells. The present study aimed to validate the suppression of BC-cell migration and invasion by baicalin and explore its regulatory effects on the TGF-β/lncRNA-MALAT1/miR-200c signaling pathway. ⋯ Mechanistically, baicalin treatment significantly downregulated the expression of TGF-β, ZEB1, and N-cadherin and upregulated E-cadherin on both mRNA and protein levels. Additionally, baicalin treatment significantly downregulated the expression of lncRNA-MALAT1 and upregulated that of miR-200c. Collectively, baicalin significantly suppresses cell viability, migration, and invasion of BC cells possibly by regulating the TGF-β/lncRNA-MALAT1/miR-200c pathway.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common heart disease and the leading cause of cardiovascular deaths worldwide. Decreased endothelial cell (EC) proliferation, increased apoptosis, inflammation, and vascular dysfunction are considered vital factors in CHD. In this study, we aimed to determine the expression and role of microRNA-195-3p and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in hypoxic-treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). ⋯ Therapeutic intervention using the microRNA-195-3p/BDNF/P-ERK1/2/Bcl-2/BAX axis could maintain EC function under hypoxic conditions, improve cell activity, and serve as a new treatment strategy for CHDs.
