Peripheral patellar denervation has a better effect in reducing postoperative anterior knee pain than patellar resurfacing in TKA.
Patellar resurfacing (PR) and peripheral patellar denervation (PD) are common surgical treatments for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The aim of study was to compare preventive effect on postoperative anterior knee pain (AKP) between PR and peripheral PD in TKA. A total of 202 patients who underwent unilateral TKA were randomized into 3 groups: T, TPD, and TPR. ⋯ There were no significant difference in Oxford knee score, range of motion (ROM), patellar score, knee society score (KSS) and activities of daily living (ADL) score among 3 groups in the follow-up period. Both PD and PR can effectively reduce the intensity and incidence of AKP after TKA and improve patients' satisfaction at 3 months after TKA. Additionally, PD is more effective on alleviating AKP than PR.

Abundant research has associated nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with atherosclerosis, but very few reports have evaluated the association between NAFLD and venous thromboembolism. We aimed to investigate the association between NAFLD and pulmonary embolism (PE) in hospitalized patients. In this retrospective case-control study, we included consecutive patients from 2 university-affiliated hospitals who were referred for CT pulmonary angiograms for a suspected PE. ⋯ The prevalence of PE was significantly higher in the NAFLD group (80 (79.2%) vs 147 (53.3%), P < .001). In a multivariate analysis, older age, recent surgery or trauma, active malignancy, smoking, and NAFLD (HR ratio = 4.339, P < .0001 and 95% CI = 2.196-8.572) were independently associated with PE development. Patients with NAFLD were associated with an increased risk of developing PE independent of other classical risk factors for PE.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of autoimmune disease commonly characterized by joint pain and stiffness. This disease progression can exhibit common deformities and other activities with limited symptoms and significantly impacts people's work and life. Electroacupuncture (EA) as a traditional Chinese therapy, showing several advantages (e.g., safety, economy, and less side effects), has been extensively used to treat AS. However, its curative effect is supported by limited evidence. Accordingly, the present study aims to comprehensively assess the reliability of EA in AS treatment. ⋯ This review reliably evidences whether EA is a reliable method for the intervention of AS.

Observational Study
Inpatients with shoulder osteoarthritis who received integrative Korean medicine treatment: Long-term follow-up of an observation study.
This study aimed to investigate the long-term clinical efficacy of and satisfaction with integrative Korean medicine (KM) treatment in patients with shoulder osteoarthritis (SOA). We conducted a prospective observational study of patients with SOA. Patients aged 19 years and older who underwent inpatient treatment for more than 1 week were eligible for enrollment in the study. ⋯ Furthermore, the EuroQol-5-dimension score also increased, showing an improvement of health-related quality of life after treatment. Integrative KM treatment is a potential option for reducing pain severity and improving function and health-related quality of life in patients with SOA. Prospective randomized studies would support this finding for the next step.

With medical advancement, common bile duct stones were treated by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), considered the standard treatment. However, ERCP might induce complications including pancreatitis and cholecystitis that could affect a subsequent laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), leading to conversion to open cholecystectomy perioperative complications. It is not yet known whether or not the time interval between ERCP and LC plays a role in increasing conversion rate and complications. Bides, in the traditional sense, after ERCP, for avoiding edema performing LC was several weeks later. Even no one study could definite whether early laparoscopic cholecystectomy after ERCP affected the prognosis or not clearly. ⋯ In the present study, LC within 24 to 72 hours conferred advantages in terms of the conversion rate, with no recurrence of acute cholecystitis episodes.
