To evaluate the change of leukocyte level caused by hyperuricemia, and to explore the relationship between leukocyte level and hypertension in elderly patients with hyperuricemia. A cross-sectional study of serum uric acid (UA) level was conducted in 1352 elderly people over 65 years old. The samples were divided into 3 categories according to the tertiles of leukocyte: Tertile 1, leukocyte ≤ 5.2 × 109/L; Tertile 2, leukocyte = 5.3-6.3 × 109/L; Tertile 3, leukocyte ≥ 6.4 × 109/L. ⋯ But the expression level of endothelial nitric oxide synthase was obviously lower in the UA group. Hyperuricemia was associated with an increased risk for hypertension. The chronic inflammation caused by hyperuricemia maybe one of important pathogenesis of incident hypertension in patients with hyperuricemia.

To investigate the clinical, laboratory, and radiological features of meningitis after lumbar epidural steroid injection (M-ESI) without accompanying spinal infection, data of patients with meningitis admitted between January 2014 and December 2021 in a single center were retrospectively reviewed. Among them, patients with a recent history of lumbar ESI were identified, and their medical records were collected. Patients with concomitant infections other than meningitis, including spinal epidural abscess, were excluded. ⋯ Symptoms subsided in a short period (median, 1 day) after initiating treatment with antibiotics and adjuvant intravenous corticosteroids. None of the patients experienced neurological sequelae. Though the cardinal symptoms and CSF findings of M-ESI were comparable to those of bacterial meningitis, M-ESI seems to have distinctive characteristics regarding the clinical course, laboratory parameters, and pneumocephalus.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is associated with a variety of diseases and can involve multiple organs and systems, with complex and nonspecific clinical manifestations that are easily misdiagnosed. Chronic EBV infection with persistent erythema multiforme (EM) on the cheek as the main manifestation is very rare and has been reported rarely. ⋯ This case suggests the need to be alert for chronic EBV infection in adolescent females with chronic facial EM rash and multiple organs and systems injury, in addition to connective tissue diseases such as SLE.

The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is unprecedented in the healthcare sector worldwide. This retrospective study focused on the length of hospital stay and clinical and therapeutic characteristics of patients with COVID-19. Retrospective data of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) positive patients were collected between March 12 and June 30, 2020, and categorized into mild, moderate, and severe disease groups based on symptoms and severity of COVID-19. ⋯ In the treatment group, 7 patients who were not treated had the shortest stay. The patients with heart failure and Group 1 received antiviral, antimalarial, and antibiotic therapy; patients in Group 3 received antimalarial and antibiotic therapy; patients in Group 4 received antiviral and antibiotic therapy were tended to have a longer hospital stay. The length of hospital stay and clinical and therapeutic characteristics are crucial indicators of pandemic management, a shorter hospital stay is a positive outcome of better COVID-19 management.

The sudden outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has deep and wide negative mental impacts on the public, and studies on the impact of COVID-19 on social and mental well-being are necessary. This study aimed to evaluate mental distress, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and its related risk factors in Chinese adults in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study used a large-scale cross-sectional design. ⋯ Self-efficacy, coping style, and social support significantly affected anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms. Participants' sociodemographic characteristics, COVID-19 pandemic-related factors, low self-efficacy, low social support, and negative coping were predictors of mental distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study will help healthcare professionals carry out early predictions and identification of high-risk groups and provide appropriate interventions to target groups during public health emergencies that plague the world.
