Pituitary apoplexy is an uncommon syndrome that often results in spontaneous hemorrhage or infarction of pituitary tumors or glands. We previously reported pituitary apoplexy occurred most frequently in nonfunctional pituitary adenomas among all types of pituitary incidentalomas. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of pituitary apoplexy in patients with incidental nonfunctional pituitary adenomas. 65 patients with pituitary incidentaloma were enrolled. ⋯ Hence, the present study indicated that pituitary apoplexy could not be related to tumor diameter. Moreover, hormonal deficiencies, hepatic dysfunction, hyponatremia or hypochloremia, and dyslipidemia might be indicators of pituitary apoplexy. There could be the possibility the treatment for dyslipidemia prevents pituitary apoplexy.

The sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) and quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA) scores are new tools which are used to assess sepsis based on the Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock Task Force. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using the SOFA and qSOFA to predict post-ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL) sepsis. Patients who underwent URSL due to ureteral stone obstruction were retrospectively reviewed using SOFA and qSOFA scores. ⋯ The areas under the curves of a qSOFA score ≥ 1 and SOFA score ≥ 2 for predicting postoperative sepsis were 0.754 and 0.823, respectively. Preoperative qSOFA and SOFA scores are convenient and effective for predicting post-URSL sepsis. Further preventive strategies should be performed in these high-risk patients.

Meningiomas are the most common extra-axial primary central nervous system tumors. There is no effective treatment or targeted therapy for meningioma except excision and radiotherapy. glycogen synthesis kinase 3β interaction protein (GSKIP) is an A-kinase anchor protein that has cytosolic scaffolding function and binds to a protein kinase A and glycogen synthesis kinase 3β to modulate different biological processes and malignant tumorigenesis through the Wnt pathway. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between GSKIP expression and the clinico-pathological parameters in meningioma using immunohistochemical staining. ⋯ Chi-square, Kaplan-Meier method, and cox regression were used to analyze the correlation between clinical parameters and immunohistochemistry staining for GSKIP. Following our immunohistochemical score, we found that higher expression of GSKIP was associated with high World Health Organization grading, recurrence, malignant transformation, and reduced overall survival time and recurrence-free survival time in meningioma. GSKIP may be a biomarker of poor prognosis and a target protein for therapy in meningioma.

Risk factors and long-term prognosis for postoperative hypoxemia in patients with acute type A aortic dissection: A retrospective observational study.
Hypoxemia is 1 of the most common complications in the patients with acute Type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). This study aimed to summarize the risk factors, management strategies and long-term prognosis for postoperative hypoxemia in ATAAD patients. Baseline characteristics and clinical data of all the patients were collected. ⋯ Logistic regression analysis revealed that PaO2/FiO2 before extubating (OR: 0.985, P < .001), paraplegia (OR: 10.994, P = .019), acute renal failure (OR: 12.590, P < .001), re-operation (OR: 4.721, P = .014) and re-admission to intensive care unit (OR: 13.727, P = .001) were independent risk factors for long-term mortality. Our results showed that overweight and prolonged CPB time were risk factors for postoperative hypoxemia in ATAAD patients. While PaO2/FiO2 before extubating were independent risk factors for long-term mortality, indicating that active correction of hypoxemia and maintain a higher PaO2/FiO2 before extubating may help to improve the prognosis of the ATAAD patients.

Simple renal cysts are the most common masses in the kidney. Most are asymptomatic and are incidentally detected on imaging examinations performed for other reasons. This study aimed to compare the results of 40 and 120 minutes ethanol sclerotherapies that were performed in a single session to treat incidentally found simple renal cysts. ⋯ There were no other complications after therapy in the 2 groups. Single session ethanol sclerotherapy with a 40 minutes retention technique is an effective, safe, and cost-effective method for the treatment of incidentally found simple renal cysts. Although the procedural time was reduced, there was no significant difference in therapeutic efficacy between the 40 and 120 minutes therapies.
