There are needs to investigate the influencing factors of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in low birth weight (LBW) newborns, to provide insights into the clinical management of NEC. This study was a retrospective cohort study. Infants admitted to our hospital from January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2021 were selected. ⋯ Congenital heart disease (OR: 2.128, 95% CI: 1.103-3.511), sepsis (OR: 1.630, 95% CI: 1.022-2.549), and blood transfusion (OR: 1.451, 95% CI: 1.014-2.085) were the independent risk factors for NEC in LBW infants, and breastfeeding (OR: 0.494, 95% CI: 0.023-0.928), probiotics feeding (OR: 0.816, 95% CI: 0.782-0.982) were the protective factors for the NEC in LBW infants. The prognosis of NEC infants undergone surgery treatment was better than that of infants undergone conservative treatments (P = .043). The incidence of NEC in LBW is high, which is affected by many factors, and comprehensive interventions targeted on the risk and protective factors should be made to improve the prognosis of LBW infants.

Ustekinumab is effective in the treatment of adult Crohn disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). However, data on its efficacy and safety in pediatric CD and UC are limited. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of Japanese children with UC treated with ustekinumab in the long-term. ⋯ To the best of our knowledge, this is the first pediatric case of moderately active UC successfully treated with ustekinumab in Japan. Ustekinumab combined with steroids is an effective and safe induction therapy for UC.

Pemphigus is a rare, devastating, bullous autoimmune disease that damages the skin and mucous membranes, and has high morbidity and mortality. Studies have shown associations of pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF) with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II polymorphisms. This study examined the frequency of Major Histocompatibility Complex, Class II, DR Beta 1, a Protein Coding gene (HLA-DRB1) and Major Histocompatibility Complex, Class II, DQ Beta 1 (HLA-DQB1) alleles in Vietnamese PV and PF patients, and the association of these polymorphisms with pemphigus subtypes and disease severity. ⋯ Pemphigus patients who have the HLA-DRB1∗04 alleles are more likely to have mild or moderate disease. The HLA-DRB1 and DQB1 alleles may influence susceptibility to pemphigus subtypes, with DQB1∗05:03 being specific for PV and DQB1∗03:02 for PF. Our findings suggest that the DRB1∗04 alleles are likely to be associated with mild and moderate disease.

In case of injuries to the subaxial cervical spine, especially in osteoporotic bone, the question of the most stable operative technique arises. There are several techniques of screw fixation available regarding dorsal stabilization. This study investigates 2 techniques (lateral mass screws (LMS) vs cervical pedicle screws (CPS)) in the subaxial cervical spine regarding primary stability in a biomechanical testing using a translational injury model. ⋯ In our loading model respecting the translational injury pattern and a flexion movement we could not verify statistically significant differences between lateral mass screws and cervical pedicle screws. Mean loading failure was slightly higher in the CPS group though.

Both weightlifting belts and wrist straps are commonly used weightlifting training aids but their effects on deadlift kinematics and performance were still not known. This study examined the effects of weightlifting belts and wrist straps on the kinematics of the deadlift exercise, time to complete a deadlift and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in male recreational weightlifters. This study used a repeated-measures, within-subjects design. ⋯ Additionally, the participants completed deadlifts faster when wearing both a belt and straps (P = .008) and perceived less exertion when wearing a belt and/or straps (P < .001). Weightlifting belts and wrist straps, when using together, have positive effects on the kinematics of deadlift, time to complete a deadlift and RPE in male recreational weightlifters. Trainers should recommend the use of a belt and straps together, but not straps alone, to recreational weightlifters when performing deadlift training.
