Impact of lenvatinib on renal function compared to sorafenib for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma.
Anti-VEGF drugs, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, play an important role in systemic therapy for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC). We examined the effects of sorafenib and lenvatinib on proteinuria and renal function. Patients who were administered sorafenib (n = 85) or lenvatinib (n = 52) as first line treatment for uHCC from July 2009 to October 2020, were enrolled in this retrospective observational study. ⋯ However, eGFR decreased in the long term (>24 weeks) in patients who have proteinuria ≥2+. Lenvatinib has a greater effect on proteinuria and renal function than sorafenib. In performing multi-molecular targeted agent sequential therapy for uHCC, proteinuria and renal function are important factors associated with drug selection after atezolizumab-bevacizumab combination therapy currently used as the first-line treatment.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is very rare subtype of SCC of the lung and it is important to distinguish basaloid to other subtypes of SCCs, since the prognosis of basaloid subtype is considered poorer than that of other non-basaloid subtypes of SCCs. Aim of this study was to assess computed tomography (CT) findings of basaloid SCC of the lung in 12 patients. From January 2016 to April 2021, 12 patients with surgically proven basaloid SCC of the lung were identified. ⋯ Internal profuse necrosis, cavitation, or calcifications were not seen. On CT, basaloid squamous cell presents as solitary nodule or mass with moderate enhancement. Tumor was located either peripheral or central compartment of the lung and cavitation was absent.

Correlations between COMT polymorphism and brain structure and cognition in elderly subjects: An observational study.
The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene has been noted to play an important role in individual variations in the aging process. We investigated whether COMT polymorphism could influence cognition related to white matter networks. More specifically, we examined whether methionine (Met) allele loading is associated with better individual cognitive performance. ⋯ The Met carrier group showed significantly lower mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity, and radial diffusivity values for the right hippocampus, thalamus, uncinate fasciculus, and left caudate nucleus than the valine homozygote group. The Met carrier group also scored higher for executive function and attention on the Korean version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Based on these results, we can assume that the COMT Met allele has a protective effect on cognitive decline contributing to individual differences in cognitive function in late life period.

The objectives of the current study were to assess the severity and clinical characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among Saudi adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. ⋯ COVID-19 patients with T2DM were associated with a higher risk of admission to the intensive care unit and mortality than COVID-19 patients without T2DM.

Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a painful disease that severely affects the daily lives of young women. External therapy using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is widely used in the clinical treatment of this disease and has achieved a good effect. There are many kinds of TCM external therapies, but the effectiveness, safety, and advantages of various methods have not been confirmed by high-quality meta-analyses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of representative TCM external therapies in patients with PD. ⋯ CRD42021297078.
