This meta-analysis aimed to identify the therapeutic effect of 0.01% atropine with orthokeratology on ocular axial elongation for myopia children. ⋯ Our meta-analysis indicates 0.01% atropine atropine is effective in slowing axial elongation in myopia children with orthokeratology.

Depletion of ovarian reserve during menopausal transition raises follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) markedly and menopause is related to an increased risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study examined the relationship between FSH and MetS in postmenopausal women. We evaluated the anthropometric values, lipid profiles, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level, Homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and serum adipokines levels in 219 postmenopausal women. ⋯ Our study showed an increased FSH level favored insulin sensitivity with a higher adiponectin and lower HOMA-IR as well as a lower incidence of MetS in postmenopausal women. These findings suggest a new approach to the role of FSH for regulating energy metabolism and for use as a biomarker of MetS risk in postmenopausal women. This systematic review is based on published researches, so there is no ethical approval required.

Correlations between COMT polymorphism and brain structure and cognition in elderly subjects: An observational study.
The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene has been noted to play an important role in individual variations in the aging process. We investigated whether COMT polymorphism could influence cognition related to white matter networks. More specifically, we examined whether methionine (Met) allele loading is associated with better individual cognitive performance. ⋯ The Met carrier group showed significantly lower mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity, and radial diffusivity values for the right hippocampus, thalamus, uncinate fasciculus, and left caudate nucleus than the valine homozygote group. The Met carrier group also scored higher for executive function and attention on the Korean version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Based on these results, we can assume that the COMT Met allele has a protective effect on cognitive decline contributing to individual differences in cognitive function in late life period.

Effect of acupuncture on gut microbiota in participants with subjective cognitive decline.
A close relationship has recently been described between subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and gut microbiota disorders. Herein, we aim to investigate the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on gut microbiota in participants with SCD. We conducted a study of 60 participants with SCD. ⋯ Acupuncture could improve global cognitive change among SCD participants by regulating the intestinal flora. Dysbiosis was found in the gut microbiome in SCD and partially relieved by acupuncture. Our study suggests that gut microbiota could be a potential therapeutic target and diagnostic biomarker for SCD.

Zhengqing fengtongning sustained-release tablets prevents gout flares in the process of ULT: A randomized, positive control, double-blind, double-simulation, multicenter trial.
When initiating urate-lowering therapy, using anti-inflammatory prophylaxis therapy for at least 3 to 6 months is strongly recommended. Previous studies have found that zhengqing fengtongning sustained-release tablets (sinomenine) can improve inflammation in the acute phase of gout; however, the efficacy of urate-lowering therapy in reducing frequency of acute flares still needs to be investigated. The aim of the present study is to explore the efficacy and safety of sinomenine for prophylaxis of acute flares when initiating urate-lowering therapy. ⋯ The Institutional Medical Ethics Committee have approved the trial protocol. We plan to publish the results of this study in a peer-reviewed journal.
