Analyzing adverse drug reaction using statistical and machine learning methods: A systematic review.
Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are unintended negative drug-induced responses. Determining the association between drugs and ADRs is crucial, and several methods have been proposed to demonstrate this association. This systematic review aimed to examine the analytical tools by considering original articles that utilized statistical and machine learning methods for detecting ADRs. ⋯ Using the 72 main articles, this review provides guidelines on which databases are frequently utilized and which analysis methods can be connected. For statistical analysis, >90% of the cases were analyzed by disproportionate or regression analysis with each spontaneous reporting system (SRS) data or electronic medical record (EMR) data; for machine learning research, however, there was a strong tendency to analyze various data combinations. Only half of the DrugBank database was occupied, and the k-nearest neighbor method accounted for the greatest proportion.

Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) has been widely used in the evaluation of body composition in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. We conducted this study to evaluate impact of phase angle (PA) and sarcopenia measured by BIA on clinical prognosis in these patients. This longitudinal retrospective study enrolled patients who underwent hemodialysis between January 2016 and March 2019. ⋯ Multivariate Cox analyses revealed that lower PA (0.51 [0.31-0.85], P = .010), higher IDWG (1.06 [1.01-1.12], P = .028) and C-reactive protein level (1.01 [1.01-1.02], P < .001), and a history of coronary artery disease (3.02 [1.04-8.77], P = .042) were significantly related to all-cause mortality after adjusting for other covariates. PA measured by BIA was an independent factor in the prediction of mortality in maintenance hemodialysis patients, regardless of sarcopenia. Intervention studies are needed to confirm if the improvement in PA is associated with better clinical outcome.

A significant number of patients suffers from refractory trigeminal neuralgia (TN) after receiving microvascular decompression (MVD) or other neuro-destructive procedure such as gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS). This study aims to demonstrate a remediable, reproducible approach to treating refractory pain effectively by percutaneous radiofrequency trigeminal rhizotomy (RF-TR). A total of 392 patients with TN were treated by RF-TR during the past 10 years. ⋯ Repeated MVD and GKRS for refractory TN may be less desirable due to a greater risk of mortality (up to 0.8%) and morbidity (4% of serious complications). Conversely, RF-TR administration with the novel navigation technique by using iCT and MR image fusion is free from any remarkable and irreversible morbidities. In this study, RF-TR not only provided an alternative and effective strategy if TN recurred but also resulted in the same NRS score improvement regardless of the status of prior treatment.

Impact of shift work on irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia: A meta-analysis.
The possible association between shift work with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) remains controversial. The purpose of the study is to conduct a meta-analysis to explore the potential association between shift work with IBS/FD. ⋯ There was a positive association between shift work and IBS. The prevalence of IBS was 81% higher among shift workers than among non-shift workers. Shift work was probably a risk factor for IBS. The low heterogeneity supports the reliability of the results. However, there was no significant association between shift work and FD. The strength of the evidence was limited and further prospective cohort studies were needed.

Association between neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer: A meta-analysis.
The prognostic role of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been explored extensively in the literature. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the link between NLR and lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer. A method for increasing specificity and sensitivity of pre-treatment staging has implications on treatment algorithms and survival. ⋯ This meta-analysis shows an association between NLR and positive lymph node status in gastric cancer patients with implications for staging, as well as preoperative personalisation of therapy.
