To investigate the effects of household income level on all-cause mortality in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Data was obtained from 7,937 participants in the Korean National Health Insurance cohort who was newly diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease using the anti-dementia medication between 2003 and 2013. All individuals were followed-up until December 2013 or death, whichever came first. ⋯ Those with low, middle-low, middle income level were likely to have more increasing risk of mortality (HR 1.142 [1.022-1.276], HR 1.211 [1.045-1.402], and HR 1.158 [1.009-1.328], respectively), compared to those with high income level. The findings of this study indicate that AD patients with low income level have higher risk for mortality. Promotion of targeted policies and priority support for these groups may help reduce the mortality rate in this vulnerable group.

Postoperative ischemic stroke in middle-aged and elderly patients with hip or knee arthroplasty remains a major postoperative challenge, little is known about its incidence and risk factors. This study sought to create a nomogram for precise prediction of ischemic stroke after hip or knee arthroplasty. Discharge data of all middle-aged and elderly patients undergoing primary hip or knee arthroplasty from May 2013 to October 2020 were queried. ⋯ The calibration curves for the probability of ischemic stroke showed optimal agreement between the probability as predicted by the nomogram and the actual probability (Hosmer-Lemeshow test: P = .818). We developed a practical nomogram that can predict the risk of ischemic stroke for middle-aged and elderly patients with hip or knee arthroplasty. This model has the potential to assist clinicians in making treatment recommendations.

We investigated the potential of nutritional and inflammatory parameters as prognostic factors for follicular lymphoma (FL), and also examined the predictive value of the early progression of disease within 24 months of first-line chemo-immunotherapy (POD24). We retrospectively analyzed 46 patients with FL admitted to Teikyo University Hospital and treated with chemo-immunotherapy between May 2009 and July 2019. Physical characteristics, blood parameters, and markers or scores for consumptive/inflammatory and nutritional conditions were used as variables. ⋯ In multivariate analysis, ECOG PS ≥2, positive BM involvement, and a serum HDL-C level <40 mg/dL remained significant for poor progression-free survival. One-year OS rate after receiving salvage chemotherapy was lower in the POD24 group (50%) and POD24 correlated with ECOG PS ≥2, positive BM involvement, a serum lactate dehydrogenase >UNL, and HDL-C <40 mg/dL by Fisher's exact test. These results indicate that low serum HDL-C levels appear to be important for predicting the risk of POD24 and the worse prognosis of FL.

The SET-CAN/NUP214 fusion gene resulting from chromosomal del(9)(q34.11q34.13) or t(9;9) (q34;q34) has been found in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myeloid sarcoma (MS). Furthermore, the SET-CAN/NUP214 fusion gene has been found in the T-ALL cell line LOUCY and the AML line MEGAL. The common features of these cases are insensitivity to chemotherapy and poor prognosis. We reviewed the characteristics and prognostic significance of the SET-CAN/NUP214 fusion gene in hematological malignancies. ⋯ The mechanism, clinical characteristics, therapy and prognosis of the SET-CAN/NUP214 fusion gene in hematological malignancies require further research.

This study aimed to assess the clinical characteristics of patients who registered at the Siriraj Favipiravir Clinic and to share our experiences in this comparatively unique clinical setting. This retrospective study included patients who registered at the Siriraj Favipiravir Clinic during August 11, 2021 to September 14, 2021. Included adult patients were those with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]) infection confirmed by antigen test kit (ATK) or real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, no favipiravir contraindication, no prior COVID-19 treatment, and not receiving care from another medical facility. ⋯ COVID-19 severity is associated with vaccination status, baseline risk factors, and timing between disease detection and treatment. The use of ATK influences patients to seek treatment significantly earlier in ambulatory setting. Our early diagnosis and antiviral treatment strategy yielded favorable results in an outpatient setting during a COVID-19 outbreak in Thailand.
