In the surgical management of Dupuytren contracture (DC), Y-V plasty (YV) and Z-plasty (ZP) are techniques often used for skin extension. However, achieving sufficient skin extension with these procedures alone is often difficult. Therefore, we addressed this issue with an adjunctive digito-lateral flap (DLF) and report the clinical results of the surgery using a DLF in addition to YV and ZP. ⋯ We attained and maintained long-term full extension intraoperatively and immediately after surgery and obtained very good treatment results, as shown in this study. In conclusion, highly favorable clinical outcomes were achieved through the combination of a DLF with YV and ZP. Skin extension with a DLF is a useful surgical technique for DC.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread globally; however, the COVID-19 mortality rate varies largely across countries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting mortality and increase in mortality rate by time trends in 30 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). These countries have different national health and medical characteristics in terms of health care use, health equipment, health resource, health risk, and health status at different time points. ⋯ Therefore, the affected countries should strengthen their medical infrastructure to prepare for such large-scale outbreaks in the future. It is imperative to reduce the health inequality between population groups and achieve health equity, regardless of the income gap, rather than vaccination of specific countries. This will require the management of non-communicable diseases, a solid health insurance system, a stable supply of medical supplies, and strengthening the competency of health care workers.

Osteoarthritis (OA) may increase urinary tract infection (UTI) in older adults. However, this issue remains unclear. We identified 8599 older patients (≥65 years) with OA, and an equal number of older patients without OA, matched by age, sex, and index date from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database between 2001 and 2005. ⋯ In addition to OA, age 75-84 years, female sex, history of UTI, benign prostatic hyperplasia, indwelling urinary catheter, cerebrovascular disease, dementia, and urolithiasis were independent predictors for any UTI. This study showed that OA was associated with UTI in older adults. We suggest appropriately managing OA and controlling underlying comorbidities to prevent subsequent UTI.

The aim of the present study was to observe the abrasion of implant drills and postoperative reactions for the preparation of the interradicular immediate implant bed during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Thirty-two implant drills were included in four groups: blank, improved surgery, traditional surgery, and control. In the improved surgery group, a dental handpiece with a surgical bur was used to decoronate the first molar and create a hole in the middle of the retained root complex, followed by the pilot drilling protocol through the hole. ⋯ This study proved that a new pilot drill could only be used once in traditional surgery but could be used regularly in improved surgery. Improved surgery was more effective, efficient, and economical than the traditional surgery. The higher FCV-19S, the more severe swelling, pain, and trismus.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most serious congenital defect in newborns with higher mortality. Alternative splicing (AS) plays an essential role in numerous heart diseases. However, our understanding of the link between mRNA splicing and CHD in humans is limited. ⋯ Overall, we identified abnormal AS in CHD-iPSC-CMs and CHD samples from patients. We predicted AS regulators in SVD and TOF, respectively. At last, we concluded that AS played a key role in the pathogenesis of CHD.
