Dysfunctions of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle, such as myofascial syndrome, torticollis, and cervical dystonia, have been treated using several invasive procedures. In such situations, it is possible to injure the adjacent nerves. This study aimed to demonstrate the course of these nerves in healthy volunteers using ultrasound. ⋯ The mean TCN proportion was 47% at the anterior border of the SCM. The precise location of the nerves and their relationship with the SCM muscle should be considered during invasive procedures. It is recommended that the procedure be performed in the lower half of the SCM muscle, which refers to 50 to 80% of the proportions in our study.

It is important to reduce the hemodynamic response during tracheal intubation. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the Airway Scope and Macintosh laryngoscope to determine whether they reduce the hemodynamic responses of heart rate (HR) and mean blood pressure (MBP) after tracheal intubation under general anesthesia. ⋯ Our finding suggested that the Airway Scope attenuated hemodynamic responses at 60 seconds after tracheal intubation in comparison with that of the Macintosh laryngoscope. However, the MBP sample size is small and further research is needed.

Limited treatment options exist for patients with mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), irrespective of vaccination history or risk status. Ensitrelvir is a novel oral severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) 3C-like (3CL) protease inhibitor. While phase 2 studies of ensitrelvir have demonstrated promising results in treating mild-to-moderate COVID-19, evaluation of its clinical efficacy due to shifting vaccination status and emergence of the Omicron variant represents significant challenges. Here, we describe the protocol for a phase 3 study designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ensitrelvir in patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19, regardless of risk status or vaccination history. ⋯ In a post hoc analysis of the phase 2b study, compared with placebo, ensitrelvir demonstrated a reduced time to resolution of 5 symptoms in patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19. Through this study, we intend to validate and establish the efficacy and safety of ensitrelvir in patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19.

This systematic review and meta-analysis set out to determine the efficacy of whole-body muscle electrostimulation on body composition, strength, and muscle power in active and non-active adults (aged ≥18 years). ⋯ We concluded that WB-electromyostimulation has significant positive effects on muscle mass, body fat, strength, and power.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is an acute cognitive dysfunction that is mainly characterized by memory impairment and disturbances in consciousness. POD can prolong the hospital stay and increase the 1-month mortality rate of patients. The overall incidence of POD is approximately 23%, and its prevalence can go up to 50% in high-risk surgeries. ⋯ Neuroinflammation, as an indispensable pathogenesis of POD, can occur due to a variety of factors, including aseptic inflammation caused by surgery, effects of anesthetic drugs, disruption of the blood-brain barrier, and epigenetics. Understanding these factors and avoiding the occurrence of risk factors may help prevent POD in time. This review provides a brief overview of POD and neuroinflammation and summarizes various factors affecting POD development mediated by neuroinflammation, which may serve as future targets for the prevention and treatment of POD.
