Uterine mesothelial cysts represent a diagnostic challenge because of their low incidence, with very few cases reported in the English literature. ⋯ Uterine mesothelial cysts are extremely rare. They are often misdiagnosed by clinicians as extrauterine masses or cystic degeneration of leiomyomas. This report aims to share a rare case of uterine mesothelial cyst and improve gynecologists' academic vision of the disease.

Extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) are common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, studies surrounding EIMs are lacking, particularly in Asia. This study aimed to identify risk factors by analyzing the characteristics of patients with EIMs. From January 2010 to December 2020, the medical records of 531 patients diagnosed with IBD (133 with Crohn disease [CD] and 398 with ulcerative colitis [UC]) were reviewed. ⋯ Multivariate analysis revealed that the risk factors for the occurrence of EIMs were a follow-up period ≥ 10 years (odds ratio, 2.106; 95% confidence interval, 1.187-3.973; P = .021) and treatment with biologics (odds ratio, 1.963; 95% confidence interval, 1.070-3.272; P = .037). The EIMs prevalence in patients with IBD was 12.4%, and the particular type was the most common, with EIMs occurring more frequently in patients with CD than in those with UC. Patients who have been treated for IBD for more than 10 years or who are using biologics should be carefully monitored as they are at high risk for EIMs.

This study aims to create a simple model for predicting disability progression and death among older adults with Japanese long-term care insurance certification. This retrospective study analyzed the anonymized data provided by Koriyama City. The participants were 7706 older adults who were initially certified to be support levels 1 and 2 or care levels 1 and 2 for the purpose of obtaining Japanese long-term care insurance. ⋯ The accuracy of classification of the decision trees were 61.1% in support levels 1and 2, and 61.7% in care levels 1 and 2. The overall accuracy of the decision tree is low, making it impractical to use it for all subjects. Nevertheless, based on the results of the 2 assessments in this study, the process of identifying a particular group of older adults at a high risk of an increased need for long-term care or possible death within a year is very simple and useful.

Among all cancer patient's lung cancer is the leading cause of death. Prognostic biomarkers continue to be investigated for the detection and stratification of lung cancer for clinical use. The DNA-dependent protein kinase is involved in mechanisms of DNA damage repair. ⋯ Strong detection of DNA-dependent protein kinase expression was most evident in small cell lung cancer (81.48 %), followed by squamous cell lung carcinoma (62.65 %) and adenocarcinoma (61.05 %). In our study, expression of DNA-dependent protein kinase was associated with poor overall survival in patients with adenocarcinoma. DNA-dependent protein kinase could serve as a new prognostic biomarker.

Comparative study between histochemical mucus volume, histopathological findings, and endocytoscopic scores in patients with ulcerative colitis.
Ulcerative colitis (UC) causes a reduction in goblet cells. However, there have been few reports on the relationship between endoscopic and pathological findings and mucus volume. In this study, we quantitatively evaluated histochemical colonic mucus volume by fixing biopsied tissue sections taken from patients with UC in Carnoy's solution and compared it with endoscopic and pathological findings to determine whether there is a correlation between them. ⋯ The relative mucus volume was significantly reduced in the local MES 1-3 groups, with worsening findings in EC-A/B/C and in groups with severe mucosal inflammation, crypt abscess, and severe reduction in goblet cells. The severity of inflammatory findings in UC by EC classification correlated with the relative mucus volume suggesting functional mucosal healing. We found a correlation between the colonic mucus volume and endoscopic and histopathological findings in patients with UC, and a stepwise correlation with disease severity, particularly in EC classification.
