Successful eradication of renal allograft abscess by CT-guided percutaneous pigtail drainage: A case report.
Renal allograft abscess is an infrequent complication in kidney transplant recipients. The mainstay of treatment is adequate drainage and optimal antibiotic administration. ⋯ Heightened alertness should be attached to that severe urinary tract infections presenting with sepsis shock and antibiotic treatment non responders are likely to progress to renal allograft abscess in kidney transplant recipients. CT-guided percutaneous pigtail drainage was a safe and effective minimally invasive treatment.

In silico studies using dynamic simulation or molecular docking have boosted the screening and identification of molecules and/or targets in studies aimed at treating diseases such as obesity and diabetes mellitus, optimizing the development of new drugs. This study aims to describe a systematic review protocol on peptides and proteins evaluated in silico as potential therapeutic agents for obesity or diabetes mellitus. ⋯ The reviews will enable knowledge of peptides and proteins involved in research treating these diseases and will emphasize the importance of in silico studies in this context and for the development of future studies.

Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common postoperative complications in patients undergoing major operations, such as spinal fusion surgery, and a major contributor to patient morbidity and mortality. SSI is considered the most preventable type of infection; however, the risk of SSI is multifactorial. This study aimed to determine the extent to which the expertise of the surgical first assistant (SFA) affected SSI rates. ⋯ After adjusting for confounding factors, SFAs that were certified neurosurgery specialists were associated with a lower likelihood of SSI (adjusted OR 0.09; 95% CI, 0.01 to 0.79; P = .029) than SFAs that were neurosurgery residents. A higher level of SFA expertise was significantly associated with a lower overall SSI rate in lumbar spine fusion surgeries. It is difficult to predict the incidence of SSI; however, this finding suggests the importance of SFA expertise in preventing SSI.

This study investigated the correlation between 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 256 multiple-slice computed tomography (MSCT) or 2-dimensional echocardiography (ECHO) in evaluating left ventricle. Forty patients were retrospectively enrolled to undergo cardiac MSCT, 3-Tesla MRI and 2-dimensional ECHO within 1 week. The end-diastolic (EDV) and end-systolic volume (ESV), stroke volume (SV) and ejection fraction (EF) were analyzed and compared. ⋯ The ECHO slightly underestimated the left ventricular function compared with MRI, with an underestimation of 9.4 mL for EDV, 3.5 mL for ESV, 5.8 mL for SV and 1.0% for EF. A wider agreement limit existed between MRI and ECHO. MSCT has a better correlation and agreement relationship with MRI parameters than 2-dimensional ECHO in assessing the left ventricle and may serve as a possible alternative to MRI.

The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) signaling pathway has gradually become a new target for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Numerous studies of PI3K/Akt signaling in OA have been published in the past few years. By analyzing these research characteristics and qualities, we aimed to reveal the current research focus and emerging trends in PI3K/Akt signaling in OA. ⋯ Our study showed a growing trend in published articles related to the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in OA. Inflammatory response, cartilage degeneration, and apoptosis remain central topics in the field. Research on autophagy, mitochondrial dysfunction, and network pharmacology is on the rise, and the focus on PI3K/Akt will continue to increase.
