Sepsis remains a significant clinical challenge owing to its complex pathophysiology and variable prognosis. The early identification of patients at a higher risk of poor outcomes can be crucial for improving treatment strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of early serum lactate and albumin levels and the lactate/albumin (L/A) ratio for 28-day prognosis in patients with sepsis. ⋯ Significant disparities in mortality rates and survival times were observed for the lactate, albumin, and L/A levels. This study underscores the predictive value of early serum lactate and albumin levels and the L/A ratio for 28-day prognosis in patients with sepsis, with the L/A ratio showing a superior predictive capability. These findings highlight the importance of L/A ratio as a robust and precise marker for evaluating the future clinical course of patients with sepsis, potentially aiding early detection and management.

There is still information about pregnancy- and lactation-associated osteoporosis, which is a type of osteoporosis that occurs in women with normal bone in the late pregnancy or lactation period. ⋯ All six patients received conservative treatment and no surgical intervention. After a mean follow-up of 27.3 months (range 24-31 months), the symptoms of the six patients were significantly relieved, although four patients still had low back pain to varying degrees.

To investigate the incidence, risk factors, and pathogenic characteristics of catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by peripherally inserted central venous catheter in neonates, and to provide references for reducing the infection rate of peripherally inserted central venous catheter. The clinical data of 680 neonates who underwent peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) in the neonatal intensive care unit from June 2020 to June 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. The risk factors and independent risk factors of catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by PICC were determined by univariate and multivariate analysis, respectively. ⋯ Among the pathogens detected, there were 6 cases of K pneumoniae, 5 cases of coagulase negative staphylococci, and 2 cases of fungi. Low birth weight, premature delivery, off-site nutrition, long catheterization time, and 5-minute APGAR score ≤7 are independent risk factors for catheter-related bloodstream infection in neonates with peripherally inserted central venous catheters. The pathogenic bacteria are fungi and multidrug-resistant bacteria.

To investigate the relationship between carotid plaque and monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) in postmenopausal women. A cross-sectional study was conducted and 214 postmenopausal women who underwent physical examination at the Health Management Center of Heping Hospital affiliated to Changzhi Medical College between August 2018 and August 2022 were enrolled. The subjects were grouped according to the results of carotid ultrasound. ⋯ After adjusting for potential confounders such height, weight, and HDL-C, binary logistic regression analysis revealed that MHR continued to be an independent risk factor for the formation of carotid plaque in postmenopausal women (odds ratio [OR] = 1.795, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.198-2.689, P = .005). ROC curve analysis indicated that MHR had a 95% CI of 0.656 to 0.793 in predicting carotid plaque formation, an optimal cut-point of 0.265, and a sensitivity and specificity of 82.2% and 58.9%, respectively. MHR is a distinct risk factor for carotid plaque formation in postmenopausal women.

Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUMSCs) belong to a multipotent stem cell population. Transplantation of icariin (ICA)-treated hUMSCs have better tissue repairing function in chronic liver injury. This study was to investigate whether the tissue-repairing effects and migration of hUMSCs after ICA treatment were regulated by circular RNAs (circRNAs). ⋯ Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis showed that only endocytosis pathway was associated with up-regulated circRNAs, whereas 4 pathways including homologous recombination, RNA transport, axon guidance, and proteoglycans in cancer were related to down-regulated circRNAs. Fifty-two differentially expressed circRNAs and 238 predicted microRNAs were included in circRNAs-microRNAs network. The mechanism of ICA inducing hUMSCs migration may be through regulating circRNAs expression which affects ADP-ribosylation factors protein signal pathways.
