Apathetic Graves' disease with severe hepatic and renal dysfunction induced by COVID-19 infection: Case report and literature review.
A rare and intractable case of apathetic Graves' disease (GD) with severe liver and kidney damage induced by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) carries a certain risk of missing diagnosis and delayed treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ COVID-19 may induce GD. Multidisciplinary collaboration can be initiated as early as possible. Individualized 131I therapy or long-term low-dose MMI (10 mg/d) can be considered to manage hyperthyroidism in GD patients with liver and kidney dysfunction and to prolong liver protection therapy appropriately.

Postpartum choriocarcinoma - a rare cause of delayed postpartum hemorrhage: Four case reports and literature review.
Delayed postpartum hemorrhage is rare, with an incidence of 0.5% to 2.0% in all pregnancies. The most important causes are placental remnants, infections, and placental bed subinvolution. Postpartum choriocarcinoma, a highly malignant complication of pregnancy, is a rare condition that can be easily misdiagnosed as other common causes, such as gestational remnants, and delays the diagnosis. ⋯ It is important to be aware of the possibility of choriocarcinoma in patients with delayed postpartum hemorrhage. Clinicians should improve the recognition of choriocarcinoma following full-term delivery, emphasize the monitoring of β-hCG, comprehensively analyze the general condition of patients, and conduct standardized and individualized chemotherapy protocols.

The value of prophylactic closed-suction drainage in totally extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair (TEP) is still a matter of controversy. We conducted a meta-analysis of studies examining postoperative seroma rates in patients with or without routine placement of closed-suction drainage tubes. ⋯ Current evidence suggests that patients who underwent TEP with routine closed-suction drain placement developed significantly fewer seromas without any additional morbidity or prolongation of in-hospital stay.

Nail-preserving excision of glomus tumor in the second toe: Case report and literature review.
This case report describes the diagnosis of a glomus tumor in the second toe of a 38-year-old female, followed by surgical treatment utilizing a transungual approach to preserve the nail. This study highlights the diagnostic challenges and surgical strategies to treat such tumors while preserving nail integrity. ⋯ This paper provides a comprehensive examination of a rare glomus tumor in the second toe, elucidating both diagnostic intricacies and treatment modalities. It emphasizes the dual necessity of achieving total tumor excision while also considering aesthetic outcomes. The insights presented herein are intended to serve as valuable guidance for clinicians confronted with similar clinical scenarios, underlining the delicate interplay between effective tumor management and the preservation of cosmetic integrity.

Observational studies have suggested a link between severe mental illness (SMI) and risk of lung carcinoma (LC); however, causality has not been established. In this study, we conducted a two-sample, two-step Mendelian randomization (MR) investigation to uncover the etiological influence of SMI on LC risk and quantify the mediating effects of known modifiable risk factors. We obtained summary-level datasets for schizophrenia, major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BD) from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC). ⋯ In the two-step MR, smoking accounted for 24.66% of the schizophrenia-LC risk association, and alcohol consumption explained 7.59% of the effect. Schizophrenia is a risk factor for lung carcinoma, and smoking and alcohol consumption are the mediating factors in this causal relationship. LC screening should be emphasized in individuals with schizophrenia, particularly in those who smoke and consume alcohol regularly.
