Acute diarrhea is a prevalent disease worldwide and a cause of mortality in low and middle-income countries. In previous studies, the causative enteropathogen is found in 38% to 58% of patients, leaving a considerable diagnostic gap. In this study, we intend to determine the pathogenic agents responsible for acute diarrhea in patients presenting to the Emergency Departments of several Lebanese hospitals. ⋯ Acute diarrhea epidemiology is understudied in Lebanon. This study is the first Lebanese data about acute diarrhea pathogens. Avoiding overuse of antibiotics in bacterial versus viral infections can be achieved while prevention campaigns can raise awareness about food and water safety at the community level.

This study aimed to examine the changes in serum Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) and Soluble Growth Stimulating Expressed Gene 2 Protein (sST2) among Heart Failure (HF) patients with varying ejection fractions and their clinical significance, providing a reference for the clinical assessment of HF severity. ⋯ As the ejection fraction decreases in HF patients, serum sST2 and LDL-C values progressively increase, which is clinically significant for predicting the severity of HF. sST2 is an independent risk factor for HF and can enhance the diagnostic accuracy for HF.

Potential protective effects of increased serum uric acid concentration in sarcopenia: A meta-analysis and systematic review.
Previous studies on the association between serum uric acid (UA) levels and sarcopenia have yielded contradictory results. This meta-analysis and literature review assessed the association between serum UA levels and sarcopenia. Moreover, we conducted a comparative analysis of the differences in serum UA concentrations between individuals with and without sarcopenia. ⋯ Individuals with sarcopenia have relatively low serum UA concentrations. A notable correlation between serum UA concentration and sarcopenia was observed. Hence, monitoring UA levels could aid in the early detection and treatment of sarcopenia, enabling timely intervention to preserve muscle mass and strength.

A new subtype of prostate cancer called treatment-related neuroendocrine prostate carcinoma (t-NEPC) was added to the revised World Health Organization classification of prostate cancer in 2022. t-NEPC cases are increasing, and there is no established standard treatment. ⋯ Platinum-based chemotherapy is often administered for the treatment of t-NEPC, but there are few reports on the effectiveness of olaparib in patients with BRCA2 mutations. In a literature review, this case demonstrated the longest duration of effectiveness with olaparib alone without platinum-based chemotherapy. Additionally, the occurrence of relatively rare, fatal brain metastases in prostate cancer after a long period of CR suggests the necessity of regular brain imaging examinations.

Effect of acupuncture on Hashimoto thyroiditis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is a common autoimmune thyroid disease for which there is no specific treatment. Oral levothyroxine sodium tablets significantly improved thyroid function but did not promote a reduction in thyroid-related antibody concentrations. Acupuncture can improve clinical symptoms and thyroid function in HT patients, reduce serum TPOAb and TGAb levels in HT patients, and improve patients' quality of life. ⋯ Compared with levothyroxine sodium tablets alone, acupuncture can significantly regulate the contents of TPOAb, TGAb, FT3, FT4 and TSH.
