Correlations between dietary factors and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have been found in previous observational studies. However, no further studies have used Mendelian randomization to further explore the causal relationship between dietary factors and ALS. Clarifying these relationships is a crucial part of developing nutritional recommendations for ALS prevention. ⋯ Negative results (P > .05) were received for all other dietary factors. This study found that oily fish intake, coffee intake and fresh fruit intake reduced the risk of developing ALS. Additionally, other factors were not associated with ALS.

Eczema is a common skin disease associated with inflammation. Interleukin (IL)-24 is crucial in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases like eczema. The study objective was the assessment of IL-24 serum levels and its gene polymorphisms in eczematic Iraqi patients. ⋯ For the second SNP genotype (rs3093425 del/ins), the genotype frequencies in patients vs control were (24.4% vs 84.1%, 50.0% vs 11.1%, and 25.6% vs 4.8; Del/Del, Del/Ins, and Ins/Ins, respectively). The presence of Ins compared to Del increased the risk of eczema by 8.91 (4.66-17.03); OR (95% CI). In conclusion, IL-24 is a good predictor of eczema and A-allele carrier for rs1150256 SNP, and insertion-allele carrier for rs3093425 SNP is associated with elevated serum IL-24 and higher risk of eczema.

The link between celiac disease (CeD) and thyroid dysfunction has been investigated. However, it is uncertain if CeD is causally linked to thyroid dysfunction. A 2-sample Mendelian randomization study was conducted to ascertain the causal connection between CeD and thyroid dysfunction. ⋯ However, no significant associations were found between CeD and thyroid-stimulating hormone or thyroiditis. Moreover, we achieve the same results in duplicate datasets, which increases the reliability of our findings. This study suggests that CeD and thyroid dysfunction are linked, and it gives theoretical support and new ways of thinking about how to diagnose and treat both conditions.

The incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has increased significantly in recent years, and for patients with metastatic and recurrent PTC, the options for treatment currently available are insufficient. To date, the exact molecular mechanism underlying PTC is still not fully understood. 5-Methylcytosine (m5C) RNA methylation is associated with the prognosis of a variety of tumors. However, the molecular mechanisms and biomarkers associated with m5C in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of this disease have not been fully elucidated. ⋯ We found that the prognostic prediction model constructed using the m5C regulators NSUN2, NSUN4, NSUN6, and DNMT3B showed good prognostic prediction ability and diagnostic ability. This model was applied to predict the survival probability of patients with PTC, the prediction ability of 5-year survival was the best. The multi-factor prognostic prediction model combined with the tumor node metastasis stage and risk score grouping showed better prognostic predictive power.

Role of hematological indices in predicting preeclampsia and its severity: retrospective case-control study.
Preeclampsia (PE) is a serious condition that threatens pregnancy with severe sequelae on both the mother and infant. Early detection of PE will lead to favorable outcomes, and using readily available markers like hematological indices is an attractive choice. Examine the diagnostic utility of hematological indices in pregnant women to predict preeclampsia and its severity. ⋯ The changes in platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) between 1st and 3rd trimesters showed an excellent ability to differentiate between severe PE and control (area under the curve = 0.954, cutoff ≤ -5.45%) and a good ability to differentiate between severe PE and non-severe PE (area under the curve = 0.841, cutoff ≤ -7.89%). Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio showed a good to excellent ability to differentiate between severe PE and non-severe PE compared to control in the first and third trimesters and the percentage change between them. Changes in neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and PLR strongly predict preeclampsia and its severity since they offer more predictive values than measuring NLP and PLR at different stages of pregnancy individually.
