Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialProlonged anesthesia with desflurane and fentanyl in dogs during conventional and laparoscopic surgery.
To determine the effects of prolonged anesthesia with desflurane in dogs undergoing laparotomy or abdominal laparoscopy. ⋯ Results suggest that induction of anesthesia with propofol and maintenance with desflurane and fentanyl is safe in dogs undergoing abdominal surgery.

Case ReportsSuspected Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea in two cats.
Two adult cats from the same household developed acute diarrhea. Clostridium difficile toxins were detected in the feces of both cats, whereas other recognized causes of diarrhea were not identified. ⋯ A fecal sample obtained from 1 of the affected cats after treatment and a fecal sample obtained from a clinically normal cat in the household did not contain C difficile toxins. The role of C difficile in enteric disease in cats has not been extensively studied and is unclear; however, our findings suggest that toxigenic strains of C difficile may cause diarrhea in cats.

Effect of hydroxyethyl starch infusion on colloid oncotic pressure in hypoproteinemic horses.
To determine the effect of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) on colloid oncotic pressure (pi) during fluid resuscitation of hypoproteinemic horses and to evaluate the clinical usefulness of direct and indirect methods for determination of pi before and after infusion of a synthetic colloid. ⋯ There was good agreement between plasma pi meas and piA + G in blood samples obtained from hypoproteinemic horses immediately before infusion of HES. Use of a predictive nomogram did not, however, account for the oncotic effect of HES. Results of comparison of pi meas to piA + G after HES infusion suggest that a significant oncotic effect was maintained for 24 hours in the study horses.
