Comparative StudyThe effect of disposable infection control barriers and physical damage on the power output of light curing units and light curing tips.
This study investigated the effects that disposable infection control barriers and physical damage through use had on the power output from dental light curing units (LCUs) and light curing tips (LCTs). Five disposable infection control barriers were tested on a number of LCUs and LCTs. Testing involved the repeated measurement of power output of LCUs and LCTs on a radiometer. ⋯ This study showed that three of the five disposable infection control barriers had little effect on the overall efficiency of the power output of the LCUs. It also showed that physical damage to LCUs and LCTs can affect power output significantly. Infection control measures should be carefully considered before use to avoid undue effects on power output delivered from the LCUs/LCTs to ensure that the degree of polymerisation within the resin-based composite and curing efficiency are not affected unduly.

The HIV positive dentist in the United Kingdom - the dilemma of the undiagnosed clinician.
This article considers the position of the HIV positive dentist in the United Kingdom who is unaware of their HIV status, or who at least has had no positive HIV test result. It outlines the current UK guidance that relates to HIV positive dentists, and the challenges to those guidelines. It considers how the behaviour of a practising seropositive dentist who has had no positive test result might be interpreted by regulatory bodies and the courts, and highlights the importance of clinicians being fully aware of their HIV status.

The Department of Health's response to the national budget deficit is to ensure that the provision of NHS services is guided by four fundamental 'QIPP' principles: Quality, Innovation, Prevention, and Productivity. This agenda will govern all aspects of the National Health Service's (NHS') health care provision for the foreseeable future. NHS dental services will, like all other NHS services, need to make a contribution to the QIPP agenda. The purpose of this paper is to outline the implications for NHS dentistry.
