Child Health Assessment at School Entry (CHASE) project: evaluation in 10 London primary schools.
To assess the feasibility of implementing the Child Health Assessment at School Entry (CHASE) questionnaire, developed to capture the multiple dimensions of the health of children in their first year at school, and to evaluate data quality, reliability and validity. ⋯ The questionnaire was acceptable to parents and school nurses, and feasible to implement within existing school resources. Initial tests of internal reliability and validity are satisfactory. These data have the potential to inform interventions and service provision at school and borough level, and public health trends over time.

Review Meta AnalysisPreventing emotional and behavioural problems: the effectiveness of parenting programmes with children less than 3 years of age.
Emotional and behavioural problems in children under 3 years of age have a high prevalence, and parenting practices have been shown to be strongly associated with their development. A number of recent systematic reviews have shown that group-based parenting programmes can be effective in improving the emotional and behavioural adjustment of older children (aged 3-10 years). The aim of this review was to establish whether there is evidence from controlled trials that group-based parenting programmes are effective in improving the emotional and behavioural adjustment of children less than 3 years of age, and their role in the primary prevention of emotional and behavioural problems. ⋯ It is concluded that this review points to the potential of parenting programmes to improve the emotional and behavioural adjustment of children less than 3 years of age, but that there is insufficient evidence from controlled trials to assess whether the short-term benefit is maintained over time, or the role that such programmes might play in the primary prevention of emotional and behavioural problems. This review points to the need for further primary preventive research on this important public health issue.

One month after diagnosis: quality of life, coping and previous functioning in siblings of children with cancer.
The aim of the present study is to describe the quality of life (QoL) of siblings of children with cancer and to predict it according to their health before the diagnosis of cancer in the ill child and their ways of coping with the illness. ⋯ During the first 2 months after the diagnosis of cancer in a brother or sister, siblings have relatively lower QoL than peers. Health problems that existed before diagnosis may be a predictor of later adjustment problems. Positive expectations about the course of the illness appear to protect siblings from distress. Information about the illness is a delicate issue that requires parental guidance.

ReviewPsycho-educational interventions for children with chronic disease, parents and siblings: an overview of the research evidence base.
The role of psycho-educational interventions in facilitating adaptation to chronic disease has received growing recognition and is in keeping with policy developments advocating greater involvement of patients in their own care. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the current literature regarding the effectiveness of psycho-educational interventions for children and adolescents with chronic disease, their parents and siblings. ⋯ This overview has highlighted the need to extend the evidence base for psycho-educational interventions, particularly in a UK context. It is essential that effective interventions are implemented and embedded in service provision in order to maximize empowerment through self-care for children, adolescents and their parents.

National survey of Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS) in England: children, young people and parents' access to and use of PALS.
Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS) have been set up in the National Health Service (NHS) in England to enable patients and the public to access information and raise issues they are concerned about their health care. The aim of this study was to examine to what extent, and how, PALS have promoted children's, young people's and parents' access to and use of the service. ⋯ PALS are intended to serve all sections of the community and accordingly need to be developed in ways that ensure the service is accessible to hard-to-reach groups such as children and young people. The remainder of the research will examine children, young people and parents' perspectives on how PALS can involve them, and will provide associated guidelines for trusts.
