This paper is a critical review of current knowledge about use of emergency departments by nursing home residents. ⋯ Current understanding of the care of nursing home residents in emergency departments is embedded in a complex web of social, historical and political factors. Research is needed that considers multiple perspectives, including those of both emergency department and nursing home staff, residents and ambulance personnel who act as mediators between the two settings.

Effects of a self-management arthritis programme with an added exercise component for osteoarthritic knee: randomized controlled trial.
This paper is a report of a study to assess the effect of an adapted arthritis self-management programme with an added focus on exercise practice among osteoarthritic knee sufferers. ⋯ Our findings add to evidence showing short-term beneficial effects of self-efficacy theory in education programmes. Self-efficacy theory has great potential for empowering sufferers of chronic conditions to live with their illness.

This paper is a report of a concept evaluation of transience and its relevance to palliative care. ⋯ Transience is potentially more meaningful for palliative care in understanding the impact of end-of-life experiences for patients than current conceptualizations of transition as a process towards resolution. As a nascent concept, it remains strongly encapsulated within a framework of transition and further conceptual development is needed to enhance its maturity and refinement.

This study reports an investigation to assess patients' and nurses' perceptions of equipment adequacy for obese patients presenting at an emergency department and to assess nurses' knowledge of equipment weight limits in the emergency department. ⋯ Specialized equipment and staff education are needed for adequate management of obese patients in the emergency department.

This paper is a report of a study to identify Norwegian undergraduate nursing students' career preferences at the beginning and end of their nursing education programme, together with their reasons for these preferences. ⋯ Nursing educators, clinical nurses and policymakers must reconsider their priorities and improve working conditions for nurses in aged care in order to meet society's need for nurses.
