To report a study of emergency nurses' experiences of caring for survivors of intimate partner violence. ⋯ Exploring the tacit internal experiences related to caring for survivors of intimate partner violence revealed emergency nurses' vulnerability to the effects of secondary traumatic stress. The findings generated an opportunity to develop guidelines through which to support and empower emergency nurses.

To examine the role of two personal resources (active, problem-focused coping; self-efficacy beliefs) in the relation between job demands and strain. ⋯ Both research and practice should focus on a closer match between personal resources and job demands to prevent nurses from being strained.
