A discussion of the existence, prevalence and characteristics of the nocebo effect in health care. ⋯ While the placebo effect is well documented, there has been no systematic attempt to synthesize primary empirical research on the role of nocebo. It is possible that nocebo outcomes may be preventable through careful consideration of information provision and the prior identification of potentially high risk individuals. This paper summarizes the scale and importance of the nocebo effect, its distribution according to a range of social and clinical variables and its known relation to psychological precursors. It identifies important gaps in the research literature.

A mixed-method study of effects of a therapeutic play intervention for children on parental anxiety and parents' perceptions of the intervention.
To examine the effects of a therapeutic play intervention for children on parents' perioperative anxiety, the relationship between parents' and their children's anxiety and to explore parents' perceptions of the intervention. ⋯ Therapeutic play intervention had no significant effect on parents' perioperative anxiety. Parents' and their children's perioperative anxiety are correlated. Parents perceived the intervention as helpful preparation for themselves and for their children undergoing elective surgery.

To evaluate the effect of early-warning scoring system design on the speed and accuracy of scoring. ⋯ Early-warning scoring systems may be more effective without individual vital sign scoring-rows. Even when charts are designed by multi-disciplinary teams of human factors specialists and clinicians, empirical evaluations are essential.
