Studies on bicarbonate transporters and carbonic anhydrase in porcine nonpigmented ciliary epithelium.
Bicarbonate transport plays a role in aqueous humor (AH) secretion. The authors examined bicarbonate transport mechanisms and carbonic anhydrase (CA) in porcine nonpigmented ciliary epithelium (NPE). ⋯ The results suggest the NPE uses a Na(+)-HCO(3)(-) cotransporter to import bicarbonate and a Cl(-)/HCO(3)(-) exchanger to export bicarbonate. CA influences the rate of bicarbonate transport. AE2, CAII, and CAIV are enriched in the NPE layer of the ciliary body, and their coordinated function may contribute to AH secretion by effecting bicarbonate transport into the eye.

Sex-specific lateralization of contraction anisocoria in transient pupillary light reflex.
Contraction anisocoria describes a phenomenon in which the pupil of a directly illuminated eye constricts more than the pupil of the consensual (not illuminated) eye. The purpose of this study was to investigate the lateralization of contraction anisocoria in young female and male subjects. ⋯ These results provide evidence that contraction anisocoria is more laterally asymmetric in males than in females.

Inhibition of corneal inflammation by the TLR4 antagonist Eritoran tetrasodium (E5564).
To investigate the role of the TLR4/MD-2 antagonist eritoran tetrasodium in a murine model of contact lens-associated corneal infiltrates. ⋯ Eritoran tetrasodium is a highly effective antagonist of TLR4/MD-2-dependent corneal inflammation.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyA randomized trial of the effect of soft contact lenses on myopia progression in children.
Soft contact lenses have been reported to increase the progression of myopia. The purpose of this study was to determine whether soft contact lenses affect the progression of myopia in children. ⋯ These data provide reassurance to eye care practitioners concerned with the phenomenon of "myopic creep." Soft contact lens wear by children does not cause a clinically relevant increase in axial length, corneal curvature, or myopia relative to spectacle lens wear. (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT00522288.).

Retinal peripapillary nerve fiber layer thickness in neuromyelitis optica.
To measure the thickness of retinal peripapillary nerve fibers throughout the course of neuromyelitis optica (NMO). ⋯ This is the first study to produce measurements of the thickness of retinal peripapillary nerve fibers during optic neuropathies of NMO. The optic neuropathies of NMO are also accompanied by an acute and chronic axonal loss, as clearly illustrated by the OCT.
