Plate fixation versus intramedullary fixation for displaced mid-shaft clavicle fractures: a systematic review.
The optimal surgical approach for displaced midshaft clavicle fracture remains controversial. The objective of this systematic review is to compare functional outcome and complications after plate fixation and intramedullary fixation for displaced midshaft clavicle fractures. ⋯ High quality evidence from one study and low quality evidence from three studies showed no difference in functional outcome or complications after plate fixation or intramedullary fixation for displaced midshaft clavicle fractures.

Less wear with aluminium-oxide heads than cobalt-chrome heads with ultra high molecular weight cemented polyethylene cups: a ten-year follow-up with radiostereometry.
Wear is a major contributor to osteolysis and aseptic loosening of total hip replacements (THR). Both alumina (Al(2)O(3)) and cobalt-chrome (CoCr) femoral heads are commonly used. We investigated wear comparing alumina heads to cobalt-chrome heads against conventional cemented polyethylene (PE) cups for up to ten years. ⋯ Alumina heads performed better than cobalt-chrome heads in this study after ten-year follow-up.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is reported to be associated with the two traditional estrogen receptor genes, ESR1 and ESR2. Yet, the novel estrogen receptor G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER) has not been studied. To investigate the association of GPER gene polymorphisms with the onset and deterioration of AIS, we performed a case-control study. ⋯ Our results demonstrate that GPER gene polymorphisms are associated with the severity of curvature in AIS; deficits of GPER may contribute to the deterioration of spine deformity.

Bone remodelling around the Metha short stem in total hip arthroplasty: a prospective dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry study.
On the basis of positive clinical results with mid- and long-term follow-up using the Mayo short stem, the Metha neck-preserving stem (BBraun, Aesculap, Tuttlingen, Germany) was introduced. The purpose of this study was to validate the implant design by direct acquisition of bone remodelling data from total hip arthroplasty (THA) recipients using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). ⋯ Stress shielding seems to occur at the greater trochanter due to the vast cross-section of the implant. However, the aim of proximal load transfer of the Metha stem seems to be partially achieved. DEXA analysis revealed a concentrated load distribution on the medial portion of the femur, which is an important region to guarantee long-term implant survival.

A five to seven year follow-up comparing computer-assisted vs freehand TKR with regard to clinical parameters.
Computer-assisted knee surgery has become established in routine clinical practice. Still, there is no study investigating midterm clinical outcome after five to seven years postoperatively. We aimed to test the hypothesis that there is no difference either for subjective [Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) scores] or for objective (Knee Society Score, degree of flexion) criteria between computer-assisted total knee replacement (TKR) and freehand TKR after 5.6-7.3 years. ⋯ No significant differences in midterm clinical outcome were found after TKR performed in the freehand vs computer-assisted technique.
