Recently we coined the term supercutaneous plating using a locking compression plate (LCP) as an external fixator. The use of this technique in peri-articular areas is facilitated by the development of anatomical plates with various screw sizes. The purpose of this report is to describe our results using the metaphyseal locking plate (LCP) as an external fixator in the treatment of infected post-traumatic problems of the distal tibia. ⋯ Infection of the distal tibia after treatment of traumatic and post-traumatic problems is a challenging problem. It is common practice that after initial debridement and hardware removal, temporary bony stabilisation is provided by external fixation. Most external frames for the lower leg are bulky and cumbersome, causing significant problems for the patient. To circumvent these issues, we have successfully used an anatomically-contoured metaphyseal locking compression plate as external fixator in a series of seven patients for acute or post-traumatic problems of the tibia.

Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
A retrospective study of posterior malleolus fractures.
In this retrospective study, we evaluated the treatment effect of ankle joint fracture surgery involving the posterior malleolus, and discuss relevant factors influencing the occurrence of traumatic arthritis of the ankle joint. ⋯ For all 102 cases of ankle joint fracture involving the posterior malleolus, the treatment effect was satisfactory. Restoration of an even articular surface, especially when fragment size ≥ 25 %, should be attempted during treatment.

The accuracy of digital templating: a comparison of short-stem total hip arthroplasty and conventional total hip arthroplasty.
Selection of the correct femoral stem size is crucial in total hip arthroplasty for an uncomplicated implantation and good initial stability. Pre-operative templating has been shown to be a valuable tool in predicting the correct implant size. For short-stem total hip arthroplasty (SHA), which recently is increasingly used, it is unknown if templating can be performed as reliable as conventional total hip arthroplasty (THA). ⋯ Digital templating of SHA can predict the stem sizes as accurately as conventional THA. Therefore digital templating is also recommendable for SHA, as it helps to predict the implant size prior to surgery and thereby might help to avoid complications.

The locking attachment plate for proximal fixation of periprosthetic femur fractures--a biomechanical comparison of two techniques.
Mechanical properties of a locking attachment plate construct (LAP-LCP), allowing bicortical screw placement laterally to the prosthesis stem, are compared to a cerclage-LCP construct. ⋯ Biomechanically, the LAP-LCP construct improves proximal fixation of periprosthetic fractures compared to the cerclage-LCP construct.

The aim of this study was to analyse the management of displaced paediatric supracondylar humerus fractures at our Level I Trauma Centre and to determine clinical and radiographic long-term results following operative treatment. ⋯ Crossed pinning in paediatric supracondylar humerus fractures is an effective method. Evaluation of the outcome in our study group demonstrated good results with the treatment approach described.
